IRS refund trace: how to track down a missing refund
Short answer
An IRS refund trace is a request asking the IRS and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to find out what happened to a refund that was sent but never reached you. You can request one 5 days after the 21-day window for a direct deposit, or 6 weeks after mailing your return for a paper check. Results usually come in about 6 weeks.
- 01Direct deposit trace eligible
- 21 days plus 5 days after e-filing
- 02Paper check trace eligible
- 6 weeks after mailing your return
- 03Typical trace result
- About 6 weeks
- 04Form for joint filers
- Form 3911 (revision 10-2022)
- 05Uncashed check under a year old
- Cancelled and replaced within about 4 weeks
What is an IRS refund trace?
An IRS refund trace is a formal inquiry into a federal refund that the IRS issued but you did not receive. The IRS confirms how and when it paid the refund, and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS), the Treasury office that actually disburses refunds, follows the payment to the bank or to the person who cashed the check.
A trace is only for refunds that have left the IRS. If Where's My Refund still shows Return Received or Refund Approved, there is nothing to trace yet; the refund is still in processing, and a trace request will not move it along.
This guide covers the whole process. For the broader list of reasons a refund may not have arrived, start with tax refund not received.
When can you request a refund trace?
You can request a trace once the IRS waiting period for your payment method has passed. According to the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), that is 5 days after the 21-day processing period for a direct deposit, and 6 weeks after you mailed your return for a paper check.
| Payment method | Rule | Filed or mailed | Earliest trace date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct deposit | 21 days plus 5 days | E-filed April 1 | April 27 |
| Direct deposit | 21 days plus 5 days | E-filed February 10 | March 8 |
| Paper check | 6 weeks from mailing | Mailed March 15 | April 26 |
| Paper check | 6 weeks from mailing | Mailed April 14 | May 26 |
IRS Tax Topic 152 adds a check-specific rule: allow 4 weeks from the date the IRS issues a check before you report it lost. If Where's My Refund shows a mailing date, count from that date as well.
How to trace a tax refund by filing status
Your filing status decides how you start. A joint refund belongs to both spouses, so the IRS wants both signatures before it opens a trace on one.
Single, head of household or married filing separately
- Where's My Refund on IRS.gov: after the waiting period, the tool offers a trace option for eligible refunds.
- The IRS2Go mobile app, which uses the same status system.
- The automated IRS refund line listed on Tax Topic 152, 800-829-1954, which can also connect you with an IRS employee.
Married filing jointly
Complete Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, and mail it to the IRS address where you would normally file a paper return, or speak with an IRS representative who can start it. Both spouses sign. The Form 3911 page walks through each line.
Can I trace a refund online?
Yes, if you filed as single, head of household or married filing separately. Where's My Refund and IRS2Go both let those filers start a trace once the waiting period has passed. Joint filers cannot finish a trace online; they need Form 3911 or a conversation with an IRS representative.
Starting online does not change the timeline. It removes the mailing step, which helps when the post office is part of the problem.
What happens during the trace
Once the trace is opened, the IRS checks whether the refund went out as a deposit or a check and passes the case to BFS. What BFS does next depends on what it finds.

| What BFS finds | What happens next | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Check never cashed, less than a year old | Check cancelled and a replacement mailed | Within about 4 weeks |
| Check never cashed, more than a year old | Replacement issued with a CP32 notice | Within about 4 weeks |
| Check was cashed | BFS mails you a claim package with a copy of the endorsed check | About 6 weeks |
| Claim shows forgery | BFS issues a replacement check | After the claim is reviewed |
| Direct deposit | BFS sends a letter to your bank to confirm where the deposit went | Within about 6 weeks |
Claim packages for cashed checks
If the trace shows your check was cashed, BFS mails you a claim package that includes a copy of the check with the endorsement on the back. Look closely at the signature and the bank stamp. If you did not sign it and did not authorize anyone to, you complete the claim stating the endorsement is not yours and return it as the package instructs.
BFS then reviews the claim. If it finds the check was forged, it issues a replacement refund. If BFS does not find a forgery, it does not issue a replacement, so check the endorsement carefully before you sign the claim. The lost refund check page covers checks that were stolen from the mail.
Tracing a direct deposit
For a deposit, the question is which account received the money. BFS writes to the financial institution named in the payment, within about 6 weeks, and asks it to confirm whether the funds were credited and to whom.
- If the bank rejected the deposit, the IRS usually freezes the refund and asks you to add a working account, often with a CP53E notice.
- If the bank credited an account that is not yours because of a wrong digit, the IRS says it is not responsible for account errors made by you or your preparer, and recovery depends on the bank; see refund sent to the wrong account.
- If the bank finds the credit in your account, the deposit was received, often under a pending or differently named entry.
Before you start a deposit trace, it is worth ruling out bank-side delays; refund sent but not in bank lists the questions to ask your bank first.
How long does a refund trace take?
Plan on about 6 weeks from the day the trace is opened to the first result, which is either a replacement check, a claim package or a bank response. TAS gives that same figure for both deposit and check traces. A forged-check claim adds review time after you return the package.
Add the waiting period before the trace and the full span is longer. A paper filer who mailed a return on March 15, traced on April 26 and received an uncashed-check replacement about 4 weeks after the trace was processed could be waiting into late May or June.
Mistakes that slow a missing refund at the IRS
- Requesting a trace before the waiting period ends. The IRS treats the refund as still in transit, and you will need to ask again later.
- Filing a second return for the same year to get the refund reissued. A new return is not a trace request and does not reissue anything.
- Leaving an old address on file. Replacement checks go to the address the IRS has, so update it with Form 8822 first.
- Treating a reduced refund as missing. An offset notice from BFS explains a smaller amount; a trace will not recover it.
Step by step
Confirm the refund was sent
Check that Where's My Refund shows Refund Sent and note the date and method.
Wait out the IRS period
Allow 21 days plus 5 days for a direct deposit, or 6 weeks from mailing for a paper check.
Rule out bank and address issues
Ask your bank about pending or returned deposits, and confirm the IRS has your current address.
Start the trace
Use Where's My Refund, IRS2Go or the automated line if not filing jointly; joint filers mail Form 3911 signed by both spouses.
Respond to what BFS sends
Cash a replacement check, return a completed claim package for a cashed check, or add a working bank account if the deposit was rejected.
Common questions
How do I start a refund trace?
If you filed single, head of household or married filing separately, use Where's My Refund, IRS2Go or the automated refund line after the waiting period. If you filed jointly, mail Form 3911 signed by both spouses to the address where you would file a paper return, or speak with an IRS representative.
Is there a fee to trace a tax refund?
No. The IRS does not charge for a refund trace, and Form 3911 is free to download from IRS.gov. Be wary of any service that charges to trace a federal refund.
Can I request a refund trace before 21 days?
No. For a direct deposit you must wait until 5 days after the 21-day processing period, and for a mailed check until 6 weeks after you mailed your return. Before those dates the IRS treats the refund as still on its way.
What does the IRS send after a refund trace?
Depending on the result, a replacement check, a replacement with a CP32 notice for checks over a year old, a claim package with a copy of the cashed check, or a letter to your bank asking where a deposit went.
Will a refund trace delay my refund further?
A trace only applies to refunds already sent, so it does not hold up processing. It can seem slow because BFS needs about 6 weeks to get answers from banks or review checks.
Can I trace a state tax refund with the IRS?
No. The IRS trace covers federal refunds only. For a missing state refund, contact your state revenue department through its official site.
