Lost refund check from the IRS: getting a replacement
Short answer
To replace a lost refund check from the IRS, request a refund trace once 4 weeks have passed since the check was issued. If the check was never cashed and is under a year old, the IRS cancels it and mails a replacement within about 4 weeks. If someone cashed it, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service sends you a claim package instead.

How do I replace a lost IRS refund check?
You replace a lost refund check from the IRS by asking for a refund trace. There is no separate replacement form: the trace tells the Treasury the check did not reach you, and the result of the trace decides whether you get a new check or a claim package.
A lost tax refund check is one the IRS has mailed that never reached you, was destroyed, or was stolen. It is different from a check that has not been issued yet. If Where's My Refund does not yet show Refund Sent with a date, your check is still in processing, and the steps below do not apply.

Before you report an IRS refund check lost in the mail
IRS Tax Topic 152 says to allow 4 weeks from the date the IRS issues a check before starting the lost-check process. The Taxpayer Advocate Service adds a second measure for paper filers: 6 weeks from the date you mailed your return. Use whichever date applies to you.
- Find the issue date in Where's My Refund and count 4 weeks from it. A check issued on May 5 counts as late from June 2.
- Confirm your mailing address. The IRS mails refund checks only to the address it has on file, usually the one on your return.
- If you moved, ask the post office at your old address about held or forwarded mail, and file Form 8822, Change of Address, so a replacement goes to the right place.
- Check with anyone who shares your mailbox, and look through mail set aside in the weeks after the issue date.
- Make sure the refund was actually meant to be a check. If you chose direct deposit and got a CP53 notice, the check timeline runs 4 weeks from the notice date.
Requesting an IRS refund check replacement
How you request the trace depends on your filing status. Single, head of household and married filing separately filers can start it in Where's My Refund, in the IRS2Go app, or through the IRS automated refund line. Married couples filing jointly must use Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, signed by both spouses, or speak with an IRS representative.
Form 3911 (revision 10-2022) asks whether the refund was a check or direct deposit, the amount, the tax period and date filed, and whether you never received a refund or received a check that was lost, stolen or destroyed. It also asks whether you signed the check. Answer that part carefully, because it decides whether a replacement is possible. Use a separate form for each refund. The Form 3911 guide covers each line, and the full process for all refund types is in the IRS refund trace guide.
How long does a replacement check take?
For a check that no one cashed, the IRS cancels the original and mails a replacement within about 4 weeks, according to Tax Topic 152. The age of the original check changes the paperwork but not the basic outcome.
| Status of the original check | Result | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Uncashed, less than 1 year old | Original cancelled, new check mailed | Within about 4 weeks |
| Uncashed, more than 1 year old | New check mailed with a CP32 notice | Within about 4 weeks |
| Cashed by someone | Claim package with a copy of the endorsed check | About 6 weeks |
| Cashed, forgery confirmed | Replacement check from BFS | After the claim is reviewed |
Checks that are more than a year old have their own issues even when they are in hand; Form 3911 notes that a Treasury check not cashed within one year of its issue date can no longer be cashed. If you found the original but it is past that point, see expired refund check.
What if someone cashed my refund check?
If the trace shows the check was cashed, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) mails you a claim package with a copy of the endorsed check, usually within 6 weeks. Compare the endorsement with your signature. If it is not yours, complete the claim and return it as instructed.
When BFS confirms a forgery, it issues a replacement check. One case gets no replacement: Form 3911 warns that if you endorsed the check yourself and someone else then cashed it, the law does not allow a replacement, because your signature was not forged. That is why a signed check should be deposited quickly or kept somewhere safe.
Lost checks will become rarer as the federal government moves away from paper. Executive Order 14247 directed agencies to stop issuing paper checks, and the IRS began phasing out paper refund checks for individuals on September 30, 2025.
Avoiding a lost federal refund check next time
The simplest fix is to skip paper. Direct deposit to an account in your name, your spouse's name or a joint account removes the mailbox from the process. If you do not have a bank account, prepaid debit cards and some mobile payment apps with routing and account numbers are accepted alternatives.
Paper checks are still available under limited exceptions, such as hardship or no electronic option. The paper check phase-out page explains who qualifies, and the tax refund not received page covers every other type of missing refund.
Common questions
Can I get a new IRS refund check if I lost mine?
Yes. Request a refund trace after 4 weeks from the issue date. If the lost check was not cashed, the IRS cancels it and sends a replacement, usually within about 4 weeks.
Can I get my lost refund check replaced by direct deposit instead?
The trace outcome described by the IRS for an uncashed lost check is a replacement check mailed to your address on file. If a CP53E notice or an online account prompt lets you add a bank account, follow that route; otherwise expect a paper replacement.
What if I find the original refund check after asking for a replacement?
Do not cash both. When you sign Form 3911 you certify that if you receive two refunds you will return one. Contact the IRS about the original, since the trace may already have cancelled it.
Is a lost refund check the same as a stolen one?
The IRS handles both through the same trace. The difference shows up in the result: a lost uncashed check is replaced, while a stolen and cashed check leads to a BFS claim package and a forgery review.
How do I know if my refund check was cashed?
Request a trace. BFS checks its records, and if the check was cashed it mails you a copy showing the endorsement.
