Tax refund status 2027: when you can check it and when refunds arrive

Short answer

You can check your 2027 tax refund status in Where's My Refund about 24 hours after you e-file your tax year 2026 return, once the IRS opens the season on a date it has not yet announced. If it opens in late January as in recent years, the first regular e-filed refunds would arrive in mid to late February 2027 (projection). Fixed so far: February 15, 2027, the earliest release date for EITC and ACTC refunds, and the April 15, 2027 filing deadline.

How do I check my 2027 tax refund status?

Use Where's My Refund on IRS.gov, the IRS2Go app or your IRS online account. Your status appears about 24 hours after you e-file a tax year 2026 return, or about 4 weeks after you mail a paper return. Where's My Refund asks for:

  • Your Social Security number or ITIN
  • Your filing status
  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount on your return
  • The tax year: 2026 for a return filed in the 2027 season

Because the IRS accepts returns only from opening day, which has not been announced, the first 2027 statuses will appear in the days after the season opens. The tools update once a day, usually overnight, so checking more often shows nothing new, and they move through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Our Where's My Refund guide explains each stage and message, and what changes in the 2027 filing season covers the new rules that can hold a refund, such as filing without bank details.

Tax refund dates 2027: what is announced and what is not

As of October 13, 2026, the IRS has not published a 2027 filing season calendar. The dates that are already certain come from law and the calendar, not from an IRS announcement. Everything else is an estimate built from how the last three seasons ran.

Tax refund dates 2027: what is set, what is pending

Only two tax refund dates for 2027 are fixed today: February 15, 2027, the earliest day EITC and ACTC refunds can be released, and April 15, 2027, the filing deadline for tax year 2026.

Filing deadline, tax year 2026: Thursday, April 15, 2027.

Earliest EITC/ACTC refund release: February 15, 2027 (federal holiday).

Season opening day: Not yet announced; usually announced in early January.

If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the law fixes your first possible refund date at February 15.

These windows apply the IRS guideline of about 3 weeks from e-filing for returns with no credit holds, reviews or bank problems.

Do not commit money to a bill or purchase based on a projected refund date.

Expected season opening window

The IRS announced the 2024 and 2026 opening days on January 8 of each year, and each season opened on the last Monday in January: January 29, 2024, January 27, 2025 and January 26, 2026. If that pattern holds, the matching day in 2027 would be Monday, January 25, 2027. This is a projection from past seasons, not an IRS date.

PATH Act dates for 2027

If you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the law fixes your first possible refund date at February 15. In 2027 that day is a Monday and also Washington's Birthday, a federal holiday, when banks generally do not post deposits. That is a calendar fact; the IRS has not said how it will handle the holiday.

February 2027: PATH Act release date

In past seasons the IRS has aimed to get most early EITC and ACTC refunds into accounts about two weeks after the release date: by February 27, 2024, March 3, 2025 and March 2, 2026. A similar target for 2027 would fall around the start of March, but the IRS has not announced it. The hold covers the full refund, and neither the IRS nor the Taxpayer Advocate Service can release it early. Details are on the PATH Act refund hold page and the EITC refund date tracker.

Tax refund schedule 2027: estimated deposit windows by filing date

These windows apply the IRS guideline of about 3 weeks from e-filing for returns with no credit holds, reviews or bank problems. Paper returns take at least 6 weeks from the day the IRS receives them, so add three weeks or more to each window if you mail your return.

Monthly calendar of 2027 refund milestones

January 2027

  • IRS expected to announce opening day, likely in early January.
  • IP PINs for the new season become available in your IRS online account starting in early January.
  • Projected opening day: Monday, January 25, 2027 (projection only).

February 2027

  • February 15: PATH Act release date for EITC/ACTC refunds, also a federal holiday.
  • Mid to late February: first regular refunds for opening-week e-filers (projection).
  • Late February: Where's My Refund shows projected dates for most early EITC/ACTC filers, if the IRS follows past practice.

March and April 2027

  • Early March: most early EITC/ACTC refunds deposited in recent seasons (2027 target not yet announced).
  • April 15 (Thursday): filing deadline for tax year 2026 returns.

After the deadline

  • October 15, 2027: deadline for returns on extension with Form 4868. An extension gives more time to file, not to pay.
  • April 15, 2030: generally the last day to claim a refund for tax year 2026 if you filed on time, because the claim window runs 3 years from the return due date for early filers. See time limits for amending a return.

How to use these dates without getting burned

Do not commit money to a bill or purchase based on a projected refund date. Projections assume a return with no problems, and the IRS summary of the National Taxpayer Advocate's 2026 mid-year report counted more than one million taxpayers who waited past normal processing times last season.

Once your return is filed, Where's My Refund is the only source for your date. Our tax refund timeline hub explains what moves a return off the normal track.

Common questions

When will I get my tax refund in 2027?

The IRS says most e-filed refunds arrive within 21 days when nothing holds the return. The 2027 opening day is not yet announced; if the season opens in late January as in the last three seasons, the first regular e-filed refunds would likely arrive in mid to late February 2027.

When do EITC refunds arrive in 2027?

Not before February 15, 2027, which the law fixes and which is also a federal holiday. The IRS usually publishes its deposit target in January; recent targets were February 27, 2024, March 3, 2025 and March 2, 2026.

Has the IRS announced the 2027 filing season date?

Not as of October 13, 2026. The IRS announced the 2024 and 2026 opening days on January 8 of those years, so an early January 2027 announcement is likely.

Will the Presidents Day holiday delay EITC refunds in 2027?

February 15, 2027 is the Washington's Birthday holiday, and banks generally do not post deposits on federal holidays. The IRS has not said how it will schedule releases around it, and past EITC targets were already about two weeks after February 15.

What is the last day to claim a 2026 tax refund?

For a return filed on time, the refund claim window generally runs 3 years from the April 15, 2027 due date, so about April 15, 2030. Later filers should check the rules for late returns and amended returns.
