Filed on April 15: when will you get your tax refund?
Short answer
If you e-file on April 15, expect your refund about 3 weeks (21 days) later, the same IRS guideline that applies all season, which points to about May 6 for a return e-filed on April 15, 2027. A mailed return takes 6 weeks or more from IRS receipt. If the IRS takes longer than 45 days, it generally owes you interest.

- Thursday, April 15, 2027 (statutory date; IRS season calendar not yet announced)
- 0221 days after April 15, 2027
- Thursday, May 6, 2027

- 6 weeks or more from IRS receipt

- 05Extended deadline
- October 15, 2027 with Form 4868
When will I get my tax refund if I filed on April 15?
Filing on the deadline does not put you in a slower line. The IRS tells e-filers to expect a refund 3 weeks (21 days) from the date they e-filed, and it does not publish a different standard for tax-day filers. For a return e-filed on Thursday, April 15, 2027, day 21 is Thursday, May 6, 2027.
That estimate assumes an accurate return, direct deposit to an account in your name, and no credit or identity reviews. Add a business day or two for your bank to post the deposit.

Filed on tax day: does deadline-week volume slow refunds?
Deadline filers join a season that is already well underway. For scale, the IRS expected about 164 million individual returns in the 2026 season and had issued 99.1 million refunds by the week ending May 8, 2026. The IRS does not publish a separate processing time for late-April returns, so no official source says a tax-day return takes longer.
What is different for deadline filers is the margin for error. A return prepared in a rush is more exposed to the problems the IRS lists as common causes of slow refunds, such as a missing signature or a math error, and a mistyped bank number can freeze the deposit. A return rejected on April 15 also needs to be fixed and resent quickly; our page on the e-file rejection grace period explains how that works.
Is a return filed on April 15 processed in 21 days?
Most are, on the IRS's own guideline. The ones that are not usually fall into a category that would be slow in February too: EITC or ACTC reviews, identity verification letters, amended returns and injured spouse claims.
Refund timing for deadline filers by filing method
| How you filed | When status appears | Estimated refund |
|---|---|---|
| E-file, direct deposit | About April 16 | By about May 6 for most filers |
| E-file, no bank account listed | About April 16 | Frozen until you respond to a CP53E |
| Paper return mailed April 15 | About May 13 (4 weeks after mailing) | 6 weeks or more after the IRS receives it, so late May or later |
| Paper return, paper check | About May 13 | Processing time plus mail time |
The paper estimate starts later than it looks, because the 6-week count begins when the IRS receives the envelope, which can be days after the postmark. See paper return processing times for why.
Extension filers and refund timing
Filing Form 4868 by April 15 gives you until October 15 to file; in 2027 that is Friday, October 15. The extension is for filing only, so any tax you owe was still due in April. If you expect a refund, there is no payment to make with the extension.
An extended return is processed on the same guidelines as any other return once it arrives. A return e-filed on October 15, 2027 reaches day 21 on Friday, November 5, 2027. The difference is when the clock starts, not how fast it runs.
Interest if the IRS is late with a tax-day refund
The IRS generally has 45 days to issue a refund without paying interest. After that, overpayment interest runs from the latest of the filing due date, the date a late return was received, the date the return is in processable form, or the payment date.
Worked example: you e-file a processable return on April 15, 2027. Day 45 is Sunday, May 30, 2027. If the refund goes out by then, no interest is added. If it goes out later, interest generally runs from April 15. The rate that applies depends on the quarter, shown below.
| Quarter | Rate | Status |
|---|---|---|
| October to December 2026 | 7% a year, compounded daily | Announced August 21, 2026 |
| January to March 2027 | Not yet announced | Usually announced in late November |
| April to June 2027 | Not yet announced | Usually announced in February |

Checklist for a tax-day filer who wants the money fast
- E-file rather than mail, even on the last day.
- Enter a bank or prepaid account in your name and verify both numbers.
- Use last year's exact AGI or your current IP PIN to avoid a rejection at the deadline.
- Save the acceptance confirmation with its date.
- Check Where's My Refund once a day starting April 16, not hourly.
- If nothing arrives by about May 11 (21 days plus 5), consider a refund trace.

Common questions
Do refunds slow down near the tax deadline?
The IRS does not publish a slower standard for deadline filers; its 21-day guideline for e-filed returns applies all season. Mistakes made in a last-minute rush are the more common cause of delay.
If I file on April 15, 2027, when should I expect my refund?
For a clean e-filed return with direct deposit, most refunds are issued within 21 days, which is May 6, 2027. A paper return takes 6 weeks or more after the IRS receives it.
Does filing an extension delay my refund?
Only because you file later. Once the extended return arrives, it follows the same processing guidelines as any other return.
Does the IRS pay interest if my April 15 refund is late?
Generally yes, if the refund is not issued within 45 days. For an April 15, 2027 filing, that means after May 30, 2027, with interest running from April 15.
What if my return is rejected on April 15?
Fix the error and resubmit as soon as you can. The IRS gives a short window to correct a rejected e-file and keep the original filing date; our e-file rejection grace period page explains the rules. Your refund clock restarts from the accepted resubmission.
