Refund approved meaning: what happens after the IRS approves your refund and when it arrives
Short answer
Refund approved means the IRS has finished processing your return, confirmed the refund amount and scheduled the date it will send the money. That date is when the IRS releases a direct deposit or mails a check, not when your bank posts it, and a mailed check can take up to 4 weeks to arrive. An approved refund can still be reduced by a Treasury offset for certain debts, which the Bureau of the Fiscal Service explains by mail.
- 01Approved means
- Processing finished, amount confirmed, send date set
- 02Date shown
- When the IRS sends the deposit or mails the check
- 03Bank timing
- Deposits may not post on weekends or federal holidays
- 04Can still be reduced
- Yes, by a Treasury Offset Program offset
Refund approved meaning, stage by stage
Refund Approved is the second of the three stages in the IRS tracker. It means the IRS has worked through your return, accepted the figures it will pay on, and set a date to release the refund. For most filers this is the point where waiting stops being open-ended.
It is also the first stage that comes with a date. Before approval, the tracker can only say the return was received. After approval, it names the day the money leaves the Treasury by direct deposit or by mail.

Where's My Refund says approved: reading the date
The date next to an approved status is the IRS send date. For a direct deposit, it is when the IRS releases the payment to your bank. For a paper check, it is roughly when the check is mailed, and the IRS says the check should reach you within 4 weeks of the date it is issued.
| Refund method | What the date means | When to expect the money |
|---|---|---|
| Direct deposit | IRS releases the deposit | Depends on your bank; weekends and federal holidays can add days |
| Paper check | IRS issues the check | Allow up to 4 weeks from the issue date |
| Split refund (Form 8888) | Each deposit released | Each bank posts its share on its own schedule |
Why the date can look odd
A date that lands on a Friday or right before a federal holiday may post the following business day at your bank. For EITC and ACTC filers, dates cannot fall before February 15 because the PATH Act blocks earlier release. February 15, 2027 is a Monday and also the Washington's Birthday federal holiday; the IRS has not yet announced its 2027 projected deposit dates for these filers, which it usually posts in January.
Refund approved: how long until sent and deposited
Approval to Refund Sent usually happens on or near the date shown. The part the IRS does not control is your bank's posting schedule. Banks may not post deposits on weekends or federal holidays, and each bank decides how quickly it makes incoming funds available.
Say the tracker shows approval on a Wednesday with a deposit date of the following Monday. The IRS releases the funds that Monday. If your bank posts same-day, you see the money Monday; if it posts next business day, Tuesday. If Monday is a federal holiday, expect it no earlier than Tuesday.
Can an approved refund still be offset or changed?
Yes, it can be reduced after approval. The IRS approves the refund it owes you, and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service then checks it against the Treasury Offset Program before paying. If you owe past-due child support, a federal agency non-tax debt, a state income tax debt or certain state unemployment compensation debts, BFS can take some or all of the refund.
A worked example
Suppose Where's My Refund approves a $2,400 refund and a state child support agency has certified a $900 past-due balance. BFS takes $900 and deposits $1,500. It then mails a notice showing the original $2,400, the $900 offset, and the agency that received it. Do not count on the IRS tracker to reflect the offset; the BFS notice is the record of what was taken and why.
If you disagree with the debt, contact the agency named in the notice, not the IRS. Our Treasury Offset Program page explains who to contact and how joint filers can claim their share with Form 8379.
IRS changes after approval
If the IRS applies your refund to a federal tax debt you owe, it sends a CP49 notice, and any leftover refund should follow within about 3 weeks unless other debts exist. That is separate from a BFS offset.
Direct deposit problems after approval
If the bank rejects the deposit, for example because the account is closed or the numbers are wrong, the IRS now usually freezes the refund instead of automatically mailing a paper check. You then receive a CP53E notice and have 30 days to add or update bank details, or choose a paper-check exception, in your IRS online account.
- Open the CP53E notice and note its date.
- Sign in to your IRS online account and add a valid account in your name, your spouse's name or a joint account.
- Allow 2 to 5 business days for the status to update.
- If you do nothing, the IRS issues a paper check after 6 weeks.
The full process is on our CP53E notice page. Remember that the IRS takes no responsibility for account numbers you or your preparer typed wrong.
Checking the approval on your transcript
Your IRS account transcript shows the same approval in code. Transaction code 846 means a refund was issued and includes any interest owed. The IRS generally has 45 days to issue a refund without interest; past that, it owes overpayment interest, counted from the latest of the due date, the date a late return was received or the payment date. The rate for individuals is 7% a year, compounded daily, for the quarter starting October 1, 2026. The rate for the first quarter of 2027 has not yet been announced; the IRS usually publishes it in late November.
See transcript code 846 for how to read the date and amount on that line. If your tracker went from approved back to a processing message, read tax return still processing, and for a refresher on the earlier stage, see what tax return accepted means. The Where's My Refund guide covers all three stages.
Common questions
How long after approved will I get my refund?
The IRS sends it on the date shown. When a direct deposit posts depends on your bank, and banks may not post on weekends or federal holidays. Paper checks can take up to 4 weeks from issue.
Can the IRS change an approved refund?
The amount can still drop. A Treasury Offset Program offset can take part of it for certain debts, and the IRS can apply it to a federal tax debt you owe. Either way you receive a notice by mail.
Why does approved show a date?
Approval means the IRS has scheduled the payment. The date is when the IRS releases the deposit or mails the check, not when your bank shows the funds.
Why does my refund say approved but no deposit date?
The date can take a day to appear because the tracker refreshes overnight. If it is still missing after a few days, check your mail and online account for a notice.
Does refund approved mean the amount is final?
It is final from the IRS side, but a BFS offset can still reduce what reaches you. The offset notice from BFS, not the tracker, shows the net amount.
