Where's My Refund says status not available: causes and fixes
Short answer
If Where's My Refund says status not available, the IRS system either has not loaded your return yet or cannot match the details you typed. Status appears about 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, 3 to 4 days after e-filing a prior-year return, and 4 weeks after mailing a paper return. Recheck your SSN, filing status and whole-dollar refund amount before assuming a problem.
- 01E-filed current-year return
- Status in about 24 hours
- 02E-filed prior-year return
- Status in 3 to 4 days
- 03Paper return
- Status in about 4 weeks
- 04Refund amount to enter (2025 Form 1040)
- Line 35a, whole dollars
When Where's My Refund says status not available
The "no information available" or status not available message means the tool could not return a record for the details you entered. It is a lookup result, not a verdict on your return. The IRS system behind Where's My Refund only finds you when the return has loaded and every detail you type matches it exactly.
There are three broad causes: you checked too early, one of the details you entered does not match the return, or the return is one the tool does not track. A fourth, less common case is a status that showed earlier and then vanished. Each has a different fix, covered below.
Timing reasons: how long after filing does status appear
Status appears only after these points. Checking earlier produces a not-available message even when nothing is wrong.
| How you filed | Status usually available | Refund usually issued |
|---|---|---|
| E-filed, current tax year | About 24 hours after the IRS accepts it | Within 21 days for most filers |
| E-filed, prior tax year | 3 to 4 days after acceptance | Varies |
| Mailed paper return | About 4 weeks after you mail it | 6 weeks or more from the date the IRS receives it |
The clock starts at acceptance, not at the moment you pressed submit. If your software still shows the return as pending or rejected, the IRS has nothing to report. A rejected e-file never enters processing; see what to do when a tax return is rejected.
Can a paper return show status not available for weeks?
Yes. A mailed return has to be opened, scanned and entered before the tool can see it, so a not-available message for the first 4 weeks is normal. Our paper return refund time page lays out the full mail timeline.
Data entry reasons the IRS refund status is not available
The tool uses three shared secrets: your SSN or ITIN, your filing status and the exact refund amount in whole dollars. A single mismatch returns the same not-available message as a return that has not loaded, so check each one against the copy of the return you filed.
- SSN or ITIN. Copy it digit by digit from the filed return rather than typing it from memory.
- Filing status. Pick the status on the filed return, not the one you meant to choose. Head of household and single are easy to swap.
- Refund amount. Use line 35a of the 2025 Form 1040 (the amount you asked to have refunded), not line 34 (the overpayment). If you applied part of the overpayment to next year, the two differ.
- Whole dollars. Type the refund with no cents. A return showing a $1,285 refund is entered as 1285, not 1285.00 or an amount from memory.
- Tax year. The tool lets you pick among recent years. Picking 2026 for a return covering 2025 finds nothing.

Why is my tax refund status not available after it worked before?
Some filers see a Return Received message one day and a not-available message the next. IRS phone procedures (IRM 21.4.1.4) tell assistors that when this happens within normal processing time, the first message is still accurate: the return was received and is being processed. The tool updates no more than once a day, usually overnight, so the advice is to check again the next day.
If the message has flipped and the normal time frame (21 days for e-file, 6 weeks for paper) has already passed, that is one of the cases where IRS assistors are told to research the account. A change in what the tool shows can also come with a letter, so watch the mail and compare with our page on a tax return under review.
Returns Where's My Refund does not track
Some filings never appear in the tool no matter how long you wait. Using the wrong tracker is a frequent cause of a permanent not-available message.
| What you filed | Shows in Where's My Refund? | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Form 1040-X amended return | No | Where's My Amended Return, about 3 weeks after submitting |
| Business returns | No | IRS business line |
| State income tax return | No | Your state revenue department's tracker |
| Returns older than the two prior tax years | No | Account transcript in your online account |
For amended returns, use Where's My Amended Return, which needs your date of birth and ZIP code instead of the refund amount.
Next steps if the message will not clear
- Confirm the return was accepted by the IRS (e-file acknowledgment in your software) or that enough mail time has passed.
- Re-enter all three details from the filed return, one at a time, and try once. Repeated guessing adds nothing, because the data updates only once a day.
- Sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account and look at the tax account transcript. A TC 150 means the return posted.
- If the tool still finds nothing more than 24 hours after e-file acceptance or 4 weeks after mailing, IRS procedures let an assistor confirm the details you should enter; after 21 days (e-file) or 6 weeks (paper) an assistor can also research the account.
- If you receive a letter, follow the letter. It overrides anything the tool says.
If the tool shows an error screen rather than the not-available text, see Where's My Refund error messages for the specific wording and what each means.
Common questions
Why does Where's My Refund say no information available?
Either the return has not loaded yet or the SSN, filing status or refund amount you typed does not match the filed return. Wait the standard time (24 hours for e-file, 4 weeks for paper) and recheck each detail.
How long after filing does refund status appear?
About 24 hours after the IRS accepts an e-filed current-year return, 3 to 4 days for an e-filed prior-year return, and about 4 weeks after you mail a paper return.
What refund amount do I enter in Where's My Refund?
Enter the refund you requested on the return in whole dollars. On the 2025 Form 1040 that is line 35a. The 2026 Form 1040 used in the 2027 season has not been released yet, so check the line number on your own copy.
Does status not available mean my return was rejected?
Not by itself. A rejected e-file is reported by your software or preparer, not by Where's My Refund. Check your e-file acknowledgment first.
Can I see my amended return in Where's My Refund?
No. Form 1040-X claims only appear in Where's My Amended Return, which starts showing status about 3 weeks after you submit the amendment.
