Refund Status

IRS refund phone number: which line to call and when

Short answer

The IRS refund phone number is 800-829-1954, an automated line that gives the same status as Where's My Refund. To reach a live person, the main individual line is 800-829-1040, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Assistors research your refund only after 21 days from e-filing, 6 weeks from mailing, or when the tool or a letter tells you to call.

The official IRS refund phone number

The IRS publishes several numbers, and each one does a different job. All of the numbers below come from the IRS telephone assistance page and Tax Topic 152. Tax Refund Desk is an independent site and is not the IRS.

The IRS where's my refund phone number, 800-829-1954, is automated. You enter your SSN, filing status and whole-dollar refund amount, and it reads back the same status the website shows. Under current IRS procedures it can also start a refund trace for a check issued at least 28 days earlier, as long as you did not file jointly and did not choose direct deposit.

When the IRS says to call about your refund

The IRS refund status phone number and the website draw on the same data, so calling early does not reveal anything new. IRS phone procedures (IRM 21.4.1.4) tell assistors not to open your account if normal processing time has not passed and the tool shows a received or scheduled message. They give you the time frames and end the call.

When a live assistor will research your refund
Your situationWorth calling?
E-filed less than 21 days ago, tool shows Return ReceivedNo, the assistor will not research it
E-filed more than 21 days ago, no refund and no letterYes
Paper return mailed more than 6 weeks ago, no statusYes
Tool shows a 4-digit reference code or a take-action messageYes, at any point
Tool says it cannot provide information 24 hours after e-file acceptance or 4 weeks after mailingYes, to confirm your details
You received a CP05 or Letter 4464COnly after 60 days from the letter date

In short, call once the standard window has passed or when the tool or a letter tells you to. If your tracker shows a code, look it up first in Where's My Refund error messages so you know what the assistor is likely to say.

How to reach an IRS live person about a refund

To reach an assistor, call 800-829-1040 rather than the automated refund line. The menus change from year to year, so listen for the options for an individual account and a refund you have already filed for. You will need to pass identity questions before the assistor can discuss the account.

  • Pick the day. The IRS says Mondays and Tuesdays are busiest, along with Presidents Day weekend and the April deadline. Wednesday to Friday tends to be shorter.
  • Expect a wait. The IRS phone page says waits average about 8 minutes in filing season (January to April) and about 15 minutes from May to December.
  • Take the callback. In high-volume periods the system may offer to call you back instead of holding.
  • Use the right specialist line. Identity verification letters list their own number; see the Taxpayer Protection Program hotline page.

Those averages hide wide gaps between lines. The National Taxpayer Advocate reported that in the 2026 filing season the IRS received 48.1 million calls and answered 9.9 million (21%), with an average hold of 14 minutes. The main Accounts Management lines did better, at a 73% level of service and about 8 minutes on hold. The identity verification line answered only 19% of calls.

What to have ready before you call

An assistor cannot help until you pass authentication, and a missing document can end the call. Gather these first.

Write down the date you e-filed or mailed the return and the date the IRS accepted it. The assistor measures the 21-day and 6-week windows from those dates, so having them in front of you saves time.

Other help if calls go unanswered

  1. Check online first. Your IRS Individual Online Account shows the tax account transcript, notices and any refund hold. See how to check IRS refund status for every free method.
  2. Book an in-person appointment. Call 844-545-5640 to schedule a visit to a Taxpayer Assistance Center, useful when you must verify identity in person.
  3. Ask the Taxpayer Advocate Service. If a delay is causing serious financial hardship, contact TAS at 877-777-4778. Our IRS hardship refund request page explains what counts.
  4. Trace a missing payment in writing. Joint filers cannot trace online and can mail Form 3911 instead of waiting on hold.

Before you dial: one last check

If the tracker simply changed format, read Where's My Refund bar disappeared before calling, since that change alone rarely justifies a call. The Where's My Refund guide covers what each normal status means, so you can tell whether you are inside the standard window.
