Where is my amended return? How to check it and what each status means
Short answer
To find where your amended return is, use the IRS tool Where's My Amended Return about 3 weeks after you submit Form 1040-X, with your Social Security number, date of birth and ZIP code. Processing normally takes 8 to 12 weeks and can take up to 16. The tool shows one of three statuses, Received, Adjusted or Completed, and covers the current tax year and up to 3 prior years.
- 01When status first appears
- About 3 weeks after you submit
- 02Information needed
- SSN or ITIN, date of birth, ZIP code
- 03Statuses
- Received, Adjusted, Completed
- 04Years covered
- Current year and up to 3 prior years
- 05Scheduled downtime
- Mondays 12 a.m. to 3 a.m. ET; some Sundays 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. ET
Where is my amended return and how do I check it?
Your amended return is tracked in a separate IRS tool called Where's My Amended Return, not in Where's My Refund. The regular refund tracker only follows original returns, so a Form 1040-X will never show there. Wait about 3 weeks after you e-file or mail the 1040-X, because the tool has nothing to display before the IRS logs it.
To look up your amended return status you need three items. The tool does not ask for the refund amount, which is different from the original-return tracker.
- Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number of the person filing the amended return.
- Date of birth for that person.
- ZIP or postal code as shown on the amended return.
- Choose the tax year you amended; the tool covers the current year and up to 3 prior years.
What do Received, Adjusted and Completed mean?
Where's My Amended Return status moves through three stages. Each one describes where the IRS is in its manual review, not when money will arrive.

| Status | What the IRS says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Received | Your 1040-X was received and is being processed | Wait; normal processing is 8 to 12 weeks, up to 16 |
| Adjusted | The IRS made an adjustment to your account, resulting in a refund, a balance due or no change in tax | Watch for a refund or a notice; check your account transcript for the date |
| Completed | Processing is finished and the IRS has mailed you the details | Read the letter; compare it with what you claimed |
What Adjusted means for a refund
Adjusted is the status people wait for, but it does not always mean a refund. It means the IRS changed your account based on the 1040-X, and that change could produce a refund, a bill or no difference. If a refund is due, the IRS pays it separately from your original refund; our page on amended return refund direct deposit covers how it is delivered.
What Completed means if the amount is different
Completed means the IRS has finished and mailed an explanation. If the IRS allowed less than you claimed, that letter explains why and how to disagree. Keep it with your records for that tax year. When the change you asked for produces a refund, the explanation is often a CP21B notice, and the IRS says the refund should follow within 2 to 3 weeks of it.
Why can't Where's My Amended Return find my amended return?
The most common reason is timing: the IRS has not logged the 1040-X yet, which takes about 3 weeks. After that, a no-record message usually means your return is one of the types the tool cannot display, or the details you typed do not match.
- Business returns and returns other than individual Form 1040-X.
- Carryback applications and claims.
- Injured spouse claims (Form 8379).
- A Form 1040 that you marked "amended" instead of using Form 1040-X.
- Returns being handled by a specialized unit such as Examination or Bankruptcy.
- A tax year older than the current year plus 3 prior years.
If yours is on that list, your IRS account transcript is the better tracking tool. A TC 971 entry shows the 1040-X was received and where it was routed, and a TC 977 shows it posted. See our amended return transcript page to read those lines.
Also re-check your ZIP code. If you moved between filing the original return and the amendment, try the ZIP code printed on the 1040-X you actually sent.
How long does the amended return status stay on Received?
The Received status can last most of the processing window, which the IRS puts at 8 to 12 weeks and up to 16 weeks in some cases. It is normal for nothing to change for two months. The Taxpayer Advocate Service uses about 120 days as its guideline for an amended return before treating it as delayed.
Returns that are incomplete, unsigned, missing an attachment, affected by identity theft, or sent to a specialized area stay on Received longer. Our breakdown of amended return processing time explains each cause.
When to call the IRS about an amended return
The IRS asks you to call about amended return status only when Where's My Amended Return tells you to. A return that is well past 16 weeks with no change is also a reasonable time to ask. The IRS amended return line listed in Tax Topic 308 is 866-464-2050; it gives the same status as the online tool, in English and Spanish.
Before calling, have a copy of the 1040-X, the date you mailed or e-filed it, any e-file acceptance confirmation, and any IRS letters. If the delay is causing financial hardship, such as a pending eviction or a utility shutoff, the Taxpayer Advocate Service may be able to help.
Tracking an amended return you have not filed correctly
If you realize the 1040-X you sent has a mistake, do not rush a second one while the first is still on Received. Wait for the first to reach Completed, so that Column A of the new 1040-X can show the figures the IRS actually allowed, following our Form 1040-X guide.

Common questions
Can I check my amended return status on the IRS2Go app?
No. IRS2Go and Where's My Refund show original returns only. Use Where's My Amended Return on IRS.gov or the IRS amended return phone line.
Why does my amended return still say Received after 10 weeks?
That is within the IRS's normal 8 to 12 week window, and the IRS says some take up to 16 weeks. The status changes only when an IRS employee finishes reviewing the 1040-X.
Does Where's My Amended Return show e-filed amended returns?
Yes. It shows Form 1040-X whether it was e-filed or mailed, about 3 weeks after the IRS receives it.
My amended return says Adjusted but no refund came. Why?
Adjusted can mean a refund, a balance due or no change. If a refund is due, it may have been reduced by an offset for a past-due debt, or it may still be scheduled. The account transcript shows a TC 846 with the refund date once it is issued.
Can I check an amended return from more than 3 years ago?
Not with the online tool, which covers the current tax year and up to 3 prior years. For an older year, order a tax account transcript, which shows changes posted after the original return.
