Amended return processing time: how long a 1040-X really takes

Short answer

The IRS amended return processing time is 8 to 12 weeks from receipt, and some Form 1040-X filings take up to 16 weeks, according to the IRS as of September 2026. Status appears online about 3 weeks after you submit. Errors, missing signatures, injured spouse claims and identity theft checks push a 1040-X past that window.

How long does an amended return take in 2026?

An amended return takes 8 to 12 weeks to process once the IRS has it, and up to 16 weeks in some cases (IRS, Where's My Amended Return, checked September 2026). The clock starts when the IRS receives the 1040-X, not when you drop it in the mail. Every amended return is still reviewed by an IRS employee, which is why the amended return processing time is several times longer than the 21 days most original e-filed refunds take.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) publishes its own guideline of about 120 days for an amended return. A 1040-X still unresolved after that point is outside the TAS guideline, and TAS may also help sooner if the delay causes a financial hardship.

Is e-filing a 1040-X faster than mailing it?

E-filing a 1040-X saves the mail and paper-intake time, but the IRS quotes the same 8 to 12 week window for both. The published range is the same because the adjustment itself is still made by hand. Where e-filing clearly helps is at the end: an e-filed 1040-X can request direct deposit, while a paper 1040-X is refunded by check.

Paper returns also carry mailroom risk during busy periods. If you mail a 1040-X, a mailing method with proof of the send date helps if you later need to show the claim was filed on time.

Why is my amended return taking so long?

The IRS lists specific reasons an amended return can take longer than 12 weeks. Most of them are within your control before you file.

Filing a 1040-X before the original return finishes processing also slows things down, because the IRS must post the original first. Our amended return guide explains why waiting for the original is usually the faster path.

Amended return refund time after the status changes

The IRS does not publish a separate timeframe between the Adjusted status and the refund payment. The refund is issued once the adjustment posts, and your account transcript then shows a TC 846 line with the refund date. That date is the most precise answer to when the money moves.

How the money arrives depends on how you filed. Our amended return refund direct deposit page explains who can get a deposit, who still receives a check, and how offsets for past-due debts can shrink the payment.

Do you get interest on an amended refund?

Yes. The 1040-X instructions say the IRS figures any interest owed and includes it in your refund. For a return filed on time, overpayment interest generally runs from the original due date, so a slow amended return earns more interest. For individuals the rate is 7% a year, compounded daily, for the quarter beginning October 1, 2026 (IRS, IR-2026-98).

As a rough illustration, if the rate stayed at 7% for a full year, daily compounding would add about $72 to a $1,000 overpayment. The rate resets every quarter; the January to March 2027 rate has not yet been announced, and the IRS usually publishes it in late November. Our page on interest on late refunds explains the start dates, and refund interest is taxable income, as our page on whether refund interest is taxable explains.

Common questions

Can I speed up my amended return?

Not after filing, unless you qualify for Taxpayer Advocate help because of a financial hardship. Before filing, you can avoid delays by signing, attaching every changed schedule and e-filing when the year allows.

Does an amended return delay my original refund?

It can if you file it before the original return has posted. If the original refund has already been issued, the 1040-X is processed on its own timeline and paid separately.

Why has my amended return taken 6 months?

Six months is well past the IRS's 16-week upper range and the TAS guideline of about 120 days. Check your transcript for a TC 971 routing to Examination, look for IRS letters, and contact the IRS; TAS may help if you face hardship.

Are amended returns slower during tax season?

The IRS publishes the same 8 to 12 week range year-round. A 1040-X mailed during peak filing months may take longer to be logged, since status appears only once the IRS receives and records it.

Does a larger amended refund take longer?

The IRS does not publish different timeframes by refund size. Returns that need more review, such as those with identity theft flags or routed to Examination, are the ones that take longer.
