Where's my refund Colorado: where to check
The Colorado Department of Revenue tracks state income tax refunds in Revenue Online (ROL), its online tax portal. The Where's My Refund lookup there shows the same information department staff see, so the department says there is no need to call just for a status. The data is updated regularly, and checking once a day is enough.
Colorado also sends paper mail when it needs something from you. If ROL shows no movement for a while, check your mailbox for a letter before assuming the refund is stuck.
What do you need for the Colorado refund tracker?
The ROL lookup needs the primary Social Security number on the return and the refund amount you claimed. The primary SSN is the first one listed on a joint return, and a spouse's number will not work.
If the lookup keeps failing, the department suggests two fixes: re-enter the refund amount carefully, and confirm you are using the primary SSN. You can also use a Letter ID in place of the refund amount. A Letter ID appears on letters the department mails, so this option helps when a letter has already told you the refund amount was changed.
How long does a Colorado refund take?
On average, the department says an e-filed Colorado return produces a refund in 3 to 5 weeks, and a paper return takes up to 3 months. Each return moves through several processing steps, so two returns filed the same day can finish weeks apart.

A worked example: e-file on February 20 and choose direct deposit, and the average window runs from about March 13 to March 27. Choose a paper check instead and add 7 to 10 business days of mail time, landing around mid-April in the slower case. File on paper and ask for a check, and the refund could arrive in late May or later.
Colorado has not yet announced its time frames for the 2027 season (tax year 2026 returns). The figures above are the department's current averages.
Why is my Colorado refund delayed?
The department lists four common causes: filing on paper, choosing a paper check, errors on the return, and returns picked for additional review. For the last two, you receive a letter explaining what happened.
Fields that most often cause Colorado errors
The department asks filers to double-check a specific set of entries before submitting, because mistakes in them slow processing.

What a Notice of Deficiency or Rejection of Refund Claim means
Either notice means the department disagrees with the refund you claimed, in part or in full. You have protest rights, and the department publishes a step-by-step guide to responding to a Rejection of Refund Claim. Read the deadline printed on the notice first, since a protest filed late may not be accepted.
Identity checks on Colorado returns
Colorado screens refunds for identity theft in two main ways, and each can add time: a Validation Key letter, and switching a direct deposit to a paper check.
The Validation Key letter
Some filers receive a letter with a Validation Key, asking them to enter information in Revenue Online to confirm the refund is theirs. Until you complete that step, the refund waits. The department warns that a slow response delays the refund, so do it as soon as the letter arrives.
Direct deposit changed to a paper check
As an anti-fraud step, Colorado converts some requested direct deposits to paper checks mailed to the address on the return. A letter comes with the check. The phone number in that letter is for people who did not file a return or were not expecting a refund, so they can report it; if the refund is yours, you do not need to call, just deposit the check.
If you did not file and a Colorado refund shows up, report it. Our guide to IRS identity verification covers the federal identity checks that often run at the same time.
What if your Colorado refund check or deposit is missing?
For a missing direct deposit, ask your bank first whether it received the credit, because electronic transactions post daily and may not show on your latest statement yet. If the bank has no record, check ROL for the refund's status and the account used.
For a paper check, wait 45 days from the issue date shown in ROL. After that, or if a check was destroyed, lost or stolen, ask the department's Tax Information Call Center for a refund reissue letter; you sign it to start the reissue. If you moved and filed a forwarding address with the Postal Service, the check is forwarded. Without one, the check has to be reissued to your new address.
Why was my Colorado refund intercepted?
A Colorado refund can be intercepted for a debt owed to a Colorado state agency, such as child or spousal support, overpaid unemployment benefits, unpaid student loans, court fines or restitution, or unpaid parking tickets. The department sends a letter naming the agency, the amount taken and whom to contact, and pays you any remainder. Disputes go to the agency that asked for the intercept, not the Department of Revenue.
If the debt belongs only to your spouse on a joint return, you can file an injured spouse claim with the department separately from your return. Include a copy of your federal return or federal Form 8379 and copies of both spouses' W-2, W-2G and 1099 forms. Our Form 8379 injured spouse page explains the federal form.
When should you contact the state about a Colorado refund?
Contact the department when a check is more than 45 days past its issue date, when you need a reissue, or when a letter asks you to. For a plain status question, ROL already shows what staff would tell you.
