Short answer

Where's my refund Michigan: check your state refund on Michigan Treasury eServices, but only after 4 to 6 weeks from the date your e-filed return was accepted, or 6 to 8 weeks after mailing a paper return. Once Treasury finishes processing, allow up to 5 to 7 more business days for the money to be issued. About 10% of returns need extra time.

Where's my refund Michigan: where to check

The Michigan Department of Treasury tracks individual income tax refunds through Michigan Treasury eServices, reached from michigan.gov/wheresmyrefund. Treasury also has an automated phone system. The status shown online is the same information Treasury's phone representatives see.

eServices does more than show a status. You can use it to answer a Treasury letter, upload documents, send and receive secure messages, and make payments. For most refund problems, uploading a requested document there is the quickest way to get the return moving again.

What do you need for the Michigan refund tracker?

Treasury says to have your tax return in front of you, whether you use eServices or call. The items it lists for callers are a good checklist for either route.

  • Your Social Security number.
  • The tax year you are asking about (2025 returns in the 2026 season).
  • Your adjusted gross income (AGI), or your total household resources (THR), the income measure used on the Homestead Property Tax Credit claim (MI-1040CR).

Copy each figure straight from the Michigan return you filed rather than typing it from memory. Treasury asks callers for the same items, so having them ready also shortens a phone call if you end up needing one.

How long does a Michigan refund take?

Michigan does not give a single refund deadline. Instead, Treasury tells you when to start checking: 4 to 6 weeks from the date you received the accepted confirmation for an e-filed return, or 6 to 8 weeks from the day you mailed a paper return. After a return is processed, the refund itself takes up to 5 to 7 business days to be issued, and Treasury says it makes no exceptions to that step.

A worked example: your e-filed return is accepted on February 9. The checking window opens March 9 and runs to March 23. If eServices shows the return processed on March 18, expect the refund to be issued by about March 27, seven business days later. Mailing the same return on February 9 pushes the first check to between March 23 and April 6.

Status updates run overnight, Monday through Friday. Checking several times a day will not show anything new, and weekend checks show Friday night's data.

Michigan refund status for the 2026 season

As of September 16, 2026, Treasury reported processing more than 5.1 million individual income tax returns and issuing over $3.79 billion in refunds since the season opened on January 26, 2026. It described that pace as in line with the previous year. The 2027 season opening date is not yet announced.

Why is my Michigan refund delayed?

Treasury says about 10% of returns fall into categories that need more time. The four it names are missing or incorrect information, identity verification to screen out fraud, complex returns with several schedules or credits, and possible debts or court-ordered garnishments that may require the refund to be intercepted. Paper filing and choosing a check instead of direct deposit also slow things down.

Michigan letters and manual reviews

Returns picked for manual review are worked in the order received. State law bars Treasury from telling you the specific reason a return was selected, so a review letter will ask for documents without explaining the trigger. If you send documents, allow about 8 weeks from when Treasury receives your response before checking the status again.

Upload through eServices when the letter allows it, since that gives you a record of the date Treasury received it. Keep copies of everything you send, including W-2s and the pages of the return the letter mentions.

Intercepts and garnishments

Part or all of a Michigan refund can be used for prior-year federal or state taxes, past-due amounts owed to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) or other state agencies, and court-ordered garnishments. Federal offsets work differently; our tax refund offset guide explains the Treasury Offset Program.

Can you speed up a Michigan refund for a hardship?

Yes, but only for three documented situations. Treasury offers an expedited review for a court-approved foreclosure, a court-approved eviction, or an official, current utility shutoff notice for your main home. You must send the documentation before Treasury will consider taking a return out of order.

Even an expedited review takes time: allow 10 to 14 business days after you submit the documents for the return to be processed, then the usual 5 to 7 business days for the refund to be issued. In practice that is about three to four weeks.

When should you contact Michigan Treasury about a refund?

Wait until the checking window for your filing method has passed and eServices still shows no progress, or until a letter asks you to respond. Calling earlier gets the same status you can see online, and Treasury says repeat callers are one reason its lines get busy.

If you do call the Individual Income Tax Call Center, it is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Treasury suggests calling mid-morning or in the afternoon and avoiding Mondays. For written questions, an eServices secure message leaves a record.

For other states, see the state tax refund status overview, or compare Colorado refund status and New Jersey refund status. If your federal refund is also slow, start with why your tax refund is taking so long.

Common questions

How do I check my Michigan state refund status?

Use Michigan Treasury eServices, reached from michigan.gov/wheresmyrefund, or use Treasury's automated phone system. Have your SSN, the tax year and your AGI or total household resources ready.

Why does Michigan say to wait 4 to 6 weeks before checking?

That is the normal processing window for e-filed returns, counted from the date you received the accepted confirmation. Checking earlier usually shows no new information.

My Michigan return shows processed. When will I get the money?

Treasury says to allow up to 5 to 7 business days after processing for the refund to be issued. It treats that as a separate step and makes no exceptions.

Why won't Michigan tell me why my return was selected for review?

State law prohibits Treasury from sharing the specific criteria used to select returns for review. Answer the letter fully and allow about 8 weeks after Treasury receives your documents.

Does Michigan pay interest if my refund is late?

Yes. Under MCL 205.30(3), interest begins 45 days after the return is received or the due date, whichever is later.
