Where's my refund Illinois: where do you check?

The Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR) tracks state refunds with Where's My Refund?, an application on MyTax Illinois. It shows whether IDOR has received your Illinois individual income tax return, whether the return is processing or finished, and the time frame for a direct deposit or a mailed check. It also tells you if the return produced no refund or if IDOR sent a notice about a change.

The tool covers only the current year's refund. For a prior-year or amended return refund, IDOR says to call its taxpayer assistance line instead. After IDOR finishes processing, the Illinois Comptroller's Find Your Illinois Tax Refund System gives more detail on the payment itself.

Where's My Refund? updates once each business day, so a change shows the next business day. Checking several times a day will not show anything new, and the federal Where's My Refund tool never shows Illinois refunds.

How long does an Illinois tax refund take?

IDOR says refunds from e-filed returns can be expected around 4 weeks after filing, and refunds from paper returns may take more than 8 weeks. It states there is no advantage to filing a paper Form IL-1040. Some refunds take longer because of filing errors or the security review IDOR uses to stop identity theft and fraud.

In the 2026 season IDOR began accepting returns on January 26, 2026, the same day the IRS opened, with an April 15, 2026 deadline. In the 2025 season it received over 6.3 million individual returns, about 91.3% of them filed electronically. IDOR has not yet announced the 2027 start date.

What does date not determined mean on Illinois Where's My Refund?

It means IDOR has approved your refund and sent it to the Comptroller, but the Comptroller has not yet sent back the payment details. Until it does, IDOR cannot show a date. IDOR says this usually takes 24 to 48 hours, after which the tool updates with more detail.

IDOR can give only a projected time frame, never an exact date, and it says the same about any date a preparer or software estimates. It also warns against counting on a refund by a certain date for a major purchase or bill.

Why did my Illinois refund come as a check or a different amount?

IDOR lists four reasons a requested direct deposit becomes a paper check:

  • IDOR could not verify the bank account information on the return.
  • It is the first year you filed a Form IL-1040.
  • Your bank did not honor the direct deposit.
  • Your bank is located outside the United States.

If the amount changed, IDOR mails a notice within 7 to 10 business days that explains the difference and how to disagree. IDOR no longer offers a debit card refund option. For how debts can also take a federal refund, see our tax refund offset guide.

How do you answer an Illinois identity verification letter?

IDOR sends an identity verification letter when a return filed with your SSN or ITIN needs proof that you are the person who filed it. You can respond on MyTax Illinois without creating an account, by taking a quiz, entering a code or attaching documents, depending on what the letter asks.

If you miss the due date on the letter, IDOR asks for two documents within 60 days of the letter date: one showing your photo and full name, and one showing your full name and the address used on the return.

Documents IDOR accepts for identity verification (examples)
Category 1: photo and full nameCategory 2: full name and return address
Illinois driver's license, current or expired less than one yearUtility bill
State ID card, or a current driver's license from another stateBank or credit card statement
Passport or military IDPayroll stub or W-2
School photo ID, or employer photo ID with a recent pay stubProperty tax bill, signed rental agreement or insurance policy

Uploading on MyTax Illinois with the Letter ID is quicker, IDOR says. Without a Letter ID you must mail copies, never originals, with the letter or Form IL-425 to IDOR's Anti-Fraud Unit. If you did not file the return, report it as identity theft on MyTax Illinois. Our IRS refund identity verification guide covers the federal letters.

When should you contact IDOR or the Comptroller?

Calling IDOR will not speed up processing. IDOR says it processes more than 6 million individual returns a year and that its phone specialists are not the staff who process them. Contact IDOR when Where's My Refund? shows a notice you need to answer, or for a prior-year or amended refund.

Replacement checks go through the Illinois Comptroller's Office, including a lost check, a check that never arrived and an uncashed prior-year check over one year old. IDOR's answer center says to contact the Comptroller once more than 10 days have passed since a check was mailed.

Common questions

How do I check my Illinois state refund status?

How long does an Illinois refund take in 2027?

IDOR has not announced anything specific to 2027. Its standing guidance is around 4 weeks after filing for e-filed returns and possibly more than 8 weeks for paper returns.

Why does Illinois Where's My Refund say date not determined?
