> Where's my refund NY: New York State refunds are tracked on the Department of Taxation and Finance's Check Your Refund Status tool, which needs your Social Security number and the whole-dollar refund you requested (Form IT-201 line 78 or IT-203 line 68 for tax years 2020 to 2025). New York publishes no fixed processing time; the status changes only when your return moves to a new stage.

## Where's my refund NY: where to check a New York State refund

Check a New York State refund on the Department of Taxation and Finance website (tax.ny.gov), using the Check Your Refund Status application. The same status is read out by the department's automated phone line and appears in your Individual Online Services account, and all three update at the same moment.

The IRS has no view of New York refunds. If your federal refund is the one you are waiting for, use the steps in our [IRS refund status check](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-status/irs-refund-status-check) guide instead. ## What do you need to check your NY state refund status?

You need two things: the Social Security number on the return and the refund amount you requested, entered in whole dollars. New York's own example is that a requested refund of $223.45 is typed as 223. Enter the New York figure, never the federal one.

| Form | Tax years | Refund line |
| --- | --- | --- |
| IT-201 (resident) | 2020 to 2025 | Line 78 |
| IT-203 (nonresident and part-year resident) | 2020 to 2025 | Line 68 |
| IT-205 (fiduciary) | 2020 to 2025 | Line 39 |
| IT-214 (real property tax credit) | 2020 to 2024 | Line 33 |
| IT-214 (real property tax credit) | 2025 | Line 20 |
| NYC-208 (NYC enhanced real property tax credit) | 2019 | Line 29 |

Where the requested refund appears on New York returns (tax.ny.gov, checked September 2026)

If that line on your return is blank or zero, you did not request a refund and the tool will not work for you. Line numbers for tax year 2026 returns, filed in the 2027 season, are not yet announced; check the chart on tax.ny.gov when the 2026 forms are released, usually in December or January.

### What happens after four wrong entries?

The tool locks you out for 24 hours after the fourth failed attempt. Before the third try, pull up the filed return itself. If a preparer filed for you and you have no copy, ask them for it; New York requires preparers to give you the return they filed. You can also request a copy from the state on Form DTF-505, which takes about 30 days. Phone staff will not read your refund amount to you, even after verifying who you are.

## What does each New York refund status message mean?

Each New York refund status message marks a processing stage, not a countdown. The department does not refresh statuses at a set hour; a message changes only when the return moves forward, so the same wording can sit there for weeks without anything being wrong.

| Status wording (short form) | What it means | Your next step |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Received and being processed, no further information | General processing stage; most returns stay here until an issue date is set | Wait; phone staff see the same message |
| Requires further review | An automated scan flagged the return for errors or fraud risk and it may be reviewed by hand | Watch the mail and your Online Services account |
| Request for information | A letter (Form DTF-948 or DTF-948-O) was sent asking for documents; expect it within 2 weeks | Respond by the date on the letter, online if possible |
| Refund adjusted | The return was processed and the refund changed | Read Form DTF-160 or DTF-161 when it arrives |
| Refund issued | A direct deposit or check has an issue date | Allow 15 days after that date before calling your bank |

New York refund status messages and what to do

### Why does my NYS tax return say still processing for weeks?

Because New York has no status for every internal step. The department says a long stretch on the same processing message means work is continuing, unless it has sent you a letter. A return that claims credits often targeted by fraud is more likely to pass through extra review systems, which is why a New York refund can trail the federal one on an identical income picture.

## How long does a New York State refund take?

New York does not publish a set number of days or weeks for refunds, unlike California or Virginia. Its stated position is that each return is different: a simple e-filed return processes faster, and a return that claims certain credits is likely to need additional review. The quickest route it recommends is to e-file and choose direct deposit.

Once the status shows an issue date for a direct deposit, New York asks you to allow 15 days for the money to post before you contact your bank. If the deposit still has not arrived after that, the department's direct deposit troubleshooting page is the next stop.

> **Claiming a credit you do not qualify for:** The department warns that an ineligible credit claim can add months to processing while it requests and reviews documents. Check the credit rules before filing rather than after a letter arrives.

## Why is my New York refund delayed or smaller than I claimed?

A New York refund is usually delayed by review or a request for documents, and reduced by a math error or a credit the department disallowed. It can also be applied to a debt, in the same way the federal [tax refund offset](https://taxrefunddesk.com/reduced-refunds) works for IRS refunds.

### Worked example: a request for information

Suppose you e-filed Form IT-201 in February claiming a $1,140 refund, and in March the tool switches to Request for information. A Form DTF-948 should arrive within about 2 weeks. You log in to Online Services, open Respond to Department Notice, upload the documents the letter lists, and the return re-enters processing once the department has them. Nothing moves while the request is open.

1. Read the letter's checklist and gather every document it names.
2. Log in to your Individual Online Services account and choose Respond to Department Notice.
3. Upload the documents before the response date printed on the letter.
4. Keep the confirmation and recheck Check Your Refund Status weekly.

## Amended returns and when to contact the New York tax department

The Check Your Refund Status tool does not cover amended New York returns. For an amended return, New York directs filers to call the amended-return number listed on its [refund status page](https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/file/refund.htm). The tool also cannot confirm that a payment you made was received; your bank statement is the record for that.

For an original return, calling rarely adds anything while the status reads processing or further review, because representatives see exactly what you see. Contact the department when a letter asks you to, when a refund issue date passed more than 15 days ago with no deposit, or when an adjustment notice does not explain the change.

If you itemized on last year's federal return, a New York refund may count as federal income; see [is a state refund taxable federally](https://taxrefunddesk.com/state-refunds/state-refund-taxable-federal). ## Common questions

### What line is the refund on a New York IT-201?

For tax years 2020 through 2025, the requested refund is on Form IT-201 line 78. Nonresidents and part-year residents filing Form IT-203 use line 68.

### Why does the NY refund tool say my information does not match?

You probably typed cents, the federal refund, or a figure from a draft return. Enter only the whole-dollar New York refund from the return you filed, such as 223 for $223.45.

### How long does New York take to process a return under further review?

New York gives no fixed period. A return under review can stay in that status for an extended time, and it may either return to processing or produce a letter asking for information.

### Can I check a New York amended return refund online?

No. The online tool does not show amended returns. New York asks amended filers to call the number listed on its refund status page.

### My NY refund says issued but the money is not in my bank. What now?

Allow 15 days from the issue date shown. If the deposit has not posted by then, ask your bank first, then use the department's direct deposit troubleshooting guidance.

### Can a New York phone agent tell me how much refund I claimed?

No. Representatives are not allowed to give out the requested refund amount even after confirming your identity. Get it from your return, your software or your preparer, or request a copy with Form DTF-505.
