> Missouri refund status is shown on the Department of Revenue's Return Tracker, which needs your Social Security number, filing status and expected refund or balance due. An e-filed return appears within 5 business days and a paper return within 3 to 4 weeks. If the refund is issued more than 45 days after you filed, Missouri adds interest of $1 or more.

## Where to check your Missouri refund status

The Missouri Department of Revenue tracks returns through its Return Inquiry System, called the Return Tracker, on the MyTax Missouri portal. It answers three questions: whether your return has been received, where your refund is, and whether the return was accepted as filed or adjusted. It shows the refund issue date once there is one.

Two features set the Missouri refund tracker apart. After you look up a return, you can sign up for a text or email alert when its status changes, so there is no need to check daily. It also covers Missouri Property Tax Credit (PTC) claims, sometimes called the circuit breaker, as well as Form MO-1040 income tax returns.

## What do you need for the Missouri refund tracker?

The Return Tracker asks for three items from your return.

1. Your Social Security number.
2. Your filing status, chosen from a list (it must match the status on the return).
3. Your anticipated refund, or the balance due if the return showed an amount owed.

Only tax year 2018 and later returns are available. For an older year, you would need to contact the department directly.

## How long does a Missouri refund take?

The department's own benchmarks describe when a return shows up in the tracker, not a guaranteed payment date. An e-filed return appears up to 5 business days after filing; a paper return appears up to 3 to 4 weeks after you mail it. Until then, a lookup finding nothing is expected.

The practical deadline is the 45-day interest rule. Under Section 143.811 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri (RSMo), a refund issued more than 45 days after the return or refund claim was filed earns interest, as long as the interest comes to at least $1. The rate is set under Section 32.065 RSMo, and the department publishes the current figure on its website.

A worked example: you e-file on March 2. The return should be visible by March 9, five business days later. If the refund has not been issued by April 16, day 45, any refund issued after that date carries interest. The department has not yet announced its 2027 refund interest rate or season dates.

## Missouri refund interest and offsets

Interest and offsets are the two reasons a Missouri refund can differ from the amount on your return, one adding money and one taking it away.

### Is Missouri refund interest taxable?

Yes, federally. IRS Publication 525 says interest received on a state or local income tax refund is reported as interest income in the year you receive it. If Missouri pays you interest, report it with your other interest, separately from the refund itself. Our page on whether [refund interest is taxable](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-options/refund-interest-taxable) explains the federal treatment.

### When can Missouri take your refund?

The department can intercept a Missouri income tax refund to pay income tax you owe from earlier years. If you own a business with unpaid sales, use, employer withholding or corporate income tax, your personal refund can go toward those debts too. You get a letter from the department whenever a refund is intercepted.

The reverse also happens: Missouri can have your federal refund intercepted to pay a Missouri tax debt, and the IRS sends a letter explaining the adjustment. The department and the IRS share information so neither pays a refund to someone who owes the other. See [can the IRS take your state refund](https://taxrefunddesk.com/reduced-refunds/irs-take-state-refund) for the federal side.

> **An expected refund does not pause collections:** The department says it will not stop collection steps because you expect a refund later. If you owe Missouri tax, set up payment or an installment agreement rather than waiting for the refund to cover it.

## Why is my Missouri refund delayed or different?

If the Return Tracker says your return was adjusted rather than accepted as filed, the department changed at least one figure, so the refund can differ from the amount you claimed. Watch your mail for the department's notice, and match it against the Individual Income Tax Notices page on dor.mo.gov, which describes each notice type. If an intercept caused the change, the separate intercept letter explains it.

### Amended Missouri returns

Missouri has no separate amended return form. You file a Form MO-1040 long form for the year being corrected and mark the amended return box, even if the original was e-filed or a short form. The department lists common errors on amended returns: the wrong amount previously paid, the wrong amount previously refunded (which must include interest, amounts carried to next year and any intercepted amount), and leaving off Form MO-A.

### Refunds for a taxpayer who has died

To claim a Missouri refund owed to someone who has died, send the refund check payable to the decedent, Form MO-1310D (Statement of Person Claiming Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer), the death certificate and, for a personal representative, proof of appointment. The federal steps are covered in our [deceased taxpayer refund](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/deceased-taxpayer-refund) guide.

## When should you contact the state about a Missouri refund?

Contact the department when a notice asks you to, when the tracker shows an adjustment you do not understand, or when a return is still not visible after the 5-business-day or 3-to-4-week window. For status alone, the tracker's text or email alerts are faster than calling. The department's contact page lists the individual income tax lines and the income tax email address.

If you itemized on last year's federal return, part of your Missouri refund may be taxable; see [state refunds and your federal return](https://taxrefunddesk.com/state-refunds/state-refund-taxable-federal). ## Common questions

### How do I check my Missouri refund status?

Use the Return Tracker on MyTax Missouri. Enter your SSN, filing status and the refund or balance due shown on your return; you can then sign up for text or email alerts.

### Why can't the Missouri refund tracker find my return?

E-filed returns can take up to 5 business days to appear and paper returns up to 3 to 4 weeks. Also check that the filing status and refund amount match the return exactly.

### Does Missouri pay interest on late tax refunds?

Yes. Under Section 143.811 RSMo, refunds issued more than 45 days after the return was filed earn interest if the interest is at least $1.

### Can I track a Missouri property tax credit refund?

Yes. The Return Tracker covers Missouri Property Tax Credit claims for 2018 and later, as well as income tax returns.

### What does 'adjusted' mean on the Missouri Return Tracker?

It means the department changed something on your return, so the refund may differ from what you claimed. Look for mail from the department describing the change before you call.
