> Where's my refund CA: check a California state refund on the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) Where's My Refund tool, using your SSN, ZIP code, the numbers in your street address and your exact refund amount. The FTB says e-filed refunds normally take up to 3 weeks and paper returns up to 3 months. Prior-year refunds are not in the tool.

## Key facts

- Agency: California Franchise Tax Board (FTB)
- E-filed refund: Normally up to 3 weeks
- Paper refund: Normally up to 3 months
- Amended return processing (FTB wait-times page, Sept 2026): About 5 months
- Refund check valid for: 6 months from the issue date

## Where's my refund CA: where to check a California refund

For a California refund, go to the Franchise Tax Board's Where's My Refund page on ftb.ca.gov or use the FTB mobile app. The FTB is the state agency that processes California personal income tax returns (Forms 540, 540 2EZ and 540NR). The IRS tracker cannot see California refunds, and the FTB tool cannot see federal ones.

If you have a MyFTB account, you can log in there instead. MyFTB shows refunds, payment history and copies of notices the FTB has mailed you, which helps when your refund changed and you want to read the explanation without waiting for the post.

## What do you need to check your California refund status?

The FTB tool asks for four items, and all four must match what the FTB has on file.

- Your Social Security number (the primary filer's number on a joint return).
- Your ZIP code as shown on the return.
- The exact refund amount from your California return, not your federal refund.
- The numbers in your mailing address. The FTB's own example: if you live at 1234 Main Street, enter 1234.

The address-number field trips up people who moved after filing. Use the street number from the address printed on the return you filed, because that is the one the FTB has. If you filed a paper return with a new address and then moved again, the old number still applies until the FTB updates your record.

## How long does a California refund take?

The FTB says an e-filed return normally produces a refund within 3 weeks, and a paper return within 3 months. Some returns and payments are pulled for extra review to check accuracy and screen for identity theft, and those take longer.

The FTB also runs a live wait-times page. As of September 2026, it listed typical personal refund times of about 1 month for e-filed returns and 4 months for paper returns, and about 5 months to process an amended personal return. Those figures move during the year, so read them as the current backlog rather than a promise.

### How to get the fastest California tax refund

E-file and choose direct deposit. On a paper return, the bank details go on Form 540 lines 116 and 117, Form 540 2EZ lines 37 and 38, or Form 540NR lines 126 and 127. The FTB warns that a wrong routing or account number can make the bank reject the deposit, which pushes the refund onto a slower path.

## Why is my California refund delayed or a different amount?

A delayed or changed California refund usually comes down to one of three things: extra fraud review, a correction to your return, or a debt the refund was used to pay. When the amount differs from the return, the FTB mails a Notice of Tax Return Change and says to wait for that letter before contacting it.

| Reason | Example | What you receive |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Return corrected | Withholding or payments do not match FTB records, or you did not qualify for a credit | Notice of Tax Return Change |
| Past California tax debt | Balance from an earlier year | Notice of Tax Return Change |
| Interagency intercept | Child support, vehicle registration collections, court-ordered debt | Notice about the intercept and the agency |
| Refund anticipation loan | Preparer took fees or a loan from the refund | Ask your preparer |

Why a California refund changes

When the amount changes, the FTB usually still sends the rest by direct deposit. That differs from some states, such as Virginia, which switch reduced refunds to paper checks. For intercepts, the FTB is only passing the money on, so questions about the debt go to the agency that claimed it. Our guide to [tax refund offsets](https://taxrefunddesk.com/reduced-refunds) explains how the federal version of this works.

## California refund status for prior years, old checks and letters

The Where's My Refund tool covers only the current year. For a prior-year California refund, you must contact the FTB directly, through a MyFTB secure message or the contact options on its website.

### What if your California refund check is older than 6 months?

FTB refund checks are valid for 6 months from the issue date. After that, you must ask for a new one, and the method depends on the check's age.

Do not write VOID on an old check you send back. The FTB asks for the original or a copy, signed by you or your authorized representative, mailed to the Returned Warrant Desk MS F283 at PO Box 942867, Sacramento CA 94267-0001.

### What if you got a California refund you did not expect?

The usual cause is a payment applied to the wrong tax year. To send it back, endorse the check 'Pay to the order of FTB' rather than voiding it, and include a letter giving your name, the fact the payment went to the wrong year, and the correct year. If you did not file and still got a refund, contact the FTB, since that can signal identity theft.

### Refund check issued to you and a spouse who has died

Take the check and a copy of the death certificate to your bank first. If the bank refuses it, the FTB can send a letter authorizing the bank to accept it, or reissue the check in your name alone if you mail it back with the certificate; allow at least 8 weeks for a reissue.

## When should you contact the FTB about a California refund?

Contact the FTB only after the normal window has passed: more than 3 weeks for an e-filed return or 3 months for a paper return, or when a letter asks you to. If you are waiting on a Notice of Tax Return Change, wait for it first, since it answers most questions about a smaller refund.

Choose the channel by urgency. The FTB's wait-times page listed a typical reply time of 19 days for a MyFTB secure message and 84 days for mail or fax on personal accounts in September 2026, so a secure message is usually far faster than a letter.

> **Federal refund questions go to the IRS:** If your federal refund is the one missing, the FTB cannot help. Start with the IRS tools described in our [IRS refund status check](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-status/irs-refund-status-check) guide. For all state trackers in one place, see [state tax refund status](https://taxrefunddesk.com/state-refunds).

The FTB has not yet announced its dates for the 2027 season (tax year 2026 returns); check the refund page again in January 2027. If you itemized and deducted California income tax, your California refund may be taxable on your federal return, which our page on [state refunds and federal tax](https://taxrefunddesk.com/state-refunds/state-refund-taxable-federal) covers. ## Common questions

### How do I check my California state refund?

Use the FTB Where's My Refund tool on ftb.ca.gov or the FTB mobile app. Enter your SSN, ZIP code, the numbers in your street address and the exact refund amount from your California return.

### Why does the FTB tool say my information does not match?

Check that you entered the California refund, not the federal one, and the street number from the address on the return you filed. A move after filing is a common cause of a mismatch.

### Can I check a California refund from last year online?

No. The FTB tool shows only the current year. For a prior-year refund you must contact the FTB, for example by MyFTB secure message.

### How long does a California amended return refund take?

The FTB's wait-times page listed about 5 months to process an amended personal return as of September 2026. That figure changes with the FTB's workload.

### My California refund check expired. How do I get a new one?

For a check 1 to 3 years old, send the FTB a signed letter with your name, the tax year and the check or a copy, and allow at least 8 weeks. For a check over 3 years old, use the Replacement Warrant Claim form FTB 3900A; that can take up to 18 months.
