> Most tax refunds arrive about three weeks after an e-filed return is accepted, because the IRS says to expect a refund within 3 weeks (21 days) of the date you e-filed and acceptance normally follows within a day or two. Returns claiming EITC or ACTC, returns under review and deposits with bank problems take longer.

## Key facts

- IRS standard: Most e-filed refunds issued within 21 days
- Clock starts: The date you e-filed
- Status visible: About 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return
- Status updates: Once a day, usually overnight
- Trace a missing deposit: 5 days after the 21-day period has passed

## Tax refund how long after accepted: what starts the 21-day clock

The IRS measures its refund timeline from the day your return was **e-filed**, not from the day it was accepted. Its guidance in [Tax Topic 152](https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc152) says most e-filed refunds go out within 3 weeks of the e-file date. Because acceptance normally lands within a day or two of transmitting, the practical answer is about three weeks from acceptance for most filers.

Acceptance means the return passed the IRS's electronic entry checks: names, Social Security numbers, prior-year AGI or PIN, and required fields. It does not mean anyone has reviewed your income or credits yet. That review happens after acceptance, while the status shows Return Received. Our page on the [accepted status](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-status/tax-return-accepted-meaning) covers what the IRS has and has not checked at that point.

> **Rejected, then accepted?:** If a return was rejected and you fixed it, the 21-day count starts from the date of the resubmission that was accepted, since that is the return the IRS is processing.

## Tax return accepted: how long until approved

Where's My Refund shows three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Status first appears about 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, or about 3 days after e-filing a prior-year return.

The IRS does not publish a separate target for the move from Received to Approved. For a clean return, that step takes up most of the 21 days, because the refund cannot be approved until processing checks finish. When it flips to Approved, the tool usually shows the date the IRS expects to send the money.

### Does acceptance on a weekend change the timing?

Returns accepted on a Saturday or Sunday enter the same queue as weekday returns, and the IRS counts its 3-week guideline from the e-file date without a separate weekend rule. The only weekend effect is at the very end: banks may not post deposits on weekends or federal holidays, so a refund sent on a Friday may not appear until the next business day.

## Tax refund how long after approved: from approval to deposit

Once the status reads Refund Approved with a date, the remaining wait is short. On the date shown, the status changes to Refund Sent and Treasury releases the payment. A direct deposit then depends on your bank's posting schedule; a paper check depends on the mail.

| Stage | Typical timing | What you see |
| --- | --- | --- |
| E-file and acceptance | Day 0 to day 2 | Acceptance message from your software |
| Status appears | About 24 hours after e-filing | Return Received |
| Processing checks | Most of the 3 weeks | Return Received, no date yet |
| Approval | Before day 21 for most filers | Refund Approved with a send date |
| Payment sent | The date shown | Refund Sent |
| Bank posts deposit | Depends on your bank | Money in your account |

## How long after accepted does it take to get a refund with EITC or ACTC

If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, the 21-day guideline does not apply the same way. The law blocks those refunds before February 15, so a return accepted on the first day of the season sits at Return Received until after that date.

In the 2026 season, the IRS said most early credit filers would see a projected date by February 21 and have their money by March 2. The 2027 dates are not yet announced; details are on our [EITC refund date](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-timelines/eitc-refund-date) page.

## When the wait after acceptance is too long

Day 21 is a checkpoint, not a deadline the IRS must meet. The IRS lists several reasons a return takes longer: math errors, a missing signature, EITC or ACTC claims, amended returns and injured spouse claims. Identity verification letters are another common cause. Here is what to do depending on what Where's My Refund shows.

1. Still Return Received after 21 days with no message: check your mail for an IRS letter or notice, since the IRS contacts you by mail when it needs something.
2. A message says the IRS needs more information or is reviewing the return: follow the instructions in the letter; the Taxpayer Advocate Service says reviews can take 45 to 180 days depending on complexity.
3. Refund Sent, but no deposit 5 days after the 21-day period: you can request a refund trace; see our [refund trace guide](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/irs-refund-trace).
4. Refund amount is lower than expected: expect a notice explaining an IRS change or a debt offset.

Until day 21 has passed, Where's My Refund is the best place to follow progress. The overall [tax refund timeline](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-timelines) lists the Taxpayer Advocate Service guideline times for each kind of delay, and our rundown of [2027 season refund changes](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-timelines/tax-refund-season-changes) explains why a missing bank account now freezes a refund instead of producing a paper check.

## Common questions

### How many days after accepted do you get your refund?

For most e-filed returns with direct deposit, about 21 days from the e-file date, which is usually a day or two before acceptance. Add a few days for your bank to post the deposit.

### Can a refund come in less than 21 days after acceptance?

Yes. Twenty-one days is the IRS's outer target for most filers, not a fixed waiting period. Many clean returns are approved sooner, but the IRS does not publish a minimum.

### Why was my friend's return accepted after mine but refunded first?

Returns do not move through processing in strict order. Credits claimed, income matching, identity filters and bank posting schedules all differ from one return to the next.

### What if it has been 21 days since accepted?

Check Where's My Refund once a day and watch your mail for a notice. If the status says Refund Sent and the deposit is still missing 5 days later, request a trace.

### Does the time of day my return was accepted matter?

Not in any way the IRS publishes. What matters is the calendar date you e-filed and whether your return needs extra checks.
