> IRS processing times for paper returns run 6 weeks or more, counted from the day the IRS receives your envelope, not the day you mail it. Where's My Refund shows a mailed return about 4 weeks after mailing. Leaving bank details off a paper return adds more time, because the IRS now freezes those refunds until you add an account or qualify for a paper check.

## Key facts

- Paper return refund: 6 weeks or more from IRS receipt
- Status first shows: About 4 weeks after mailing
- E-filed comparison: Most refunds within 21 days
- No bank account on the return: Refund frozen until you act
- Paper check phase-out began: September 30, 2025

## IRS processing times for paper returns

The IRS says refunds on mailed returns take **6 weeks or more from the date it receives the return**. That is at least twice the 21-day guideline for e-filed returns, and it starts later, because transit and mailroom time come first.

The difference comes from how a paper return enters the system. An e-filed return arrives as data and is screened at submission, which is why errors come back as rejects. A paper return has to be opened, sorted and entered into IRS systems before refund processing begins.

| | Paper return | E-filed return |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Clock starts | When the IRS receives the envelope | When you e-file |
| Status visible in Where's My Refund | About 4 weeks after mailing | About 24 hours (current year) |
| Typical refund time | 6 weeks or more | Within 21 days for most |
| Refund trace allowed | No check within 6 weeks of mailing | No deposit 5 days after 21 days |

## How long does a paper tax return take to show up in Where's My Refund

Do not start checking the day after you mail. The IRS says Where's My Refund begins showing a paper return about **4 weeks after you mail it**. Checking before then usually produces a message that the IRS has no information, which does not mean the return is lost.

You will need your SSN or ITIN, filing status and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from the return, so keep a copy of what you mailed. If the status still shows nothing after about 6 weeks, see our page on [refund status not available](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-status/refund-status-not-available) for the next checks.

> **Proof of mailing:** Sending the return by certified mail or another trackable service gives you dated proof of when you mailed it. It does not speed processing, but it helps if a deadline question comes up later.

## Tax refunds delayed without direct deposit

Leaving the bank section of a return blank now costs time. Executive Order 14247 directs federal agencies to stop issuing paper checks, and the IRS began phasing out paper refund checks for individuals on **September 30, 2025**.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service explains that a return filed without bank information is still processed, but the refund is **temporarily frozen** until you add an account or request a paper check. The IRS then sends a CP53E notice. You have 30 days to add or update an account, or choose a paper-check exception, through your IRS online account. If you do not respond, the IRS mails a paper check after 6 weeks.

### What that adds to a mailed tax return refund time

Here is an illustration, not an IRS estimate. Suppose the IRS receives your paper return on March 1 and processing takes the standard 6 weeks. The refund would be ready around mid-April. With no bank account listed, it is frozen instead and a CP53E goes out. If you ignore the notice, the check is issued about 6 weeks later, which pushes delivery toward June. Responding the week the notice arrives, then allowing 2 to 5 business days for the status to update, cuts most of that wait.

Paper-check exceptions cover hardship, legal or procedural requirements, and cases with no electronic option. People without a bank account can often use a prepaid debit card or a mobile account instead; see [getting a refund without a bank account](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-options/refund-without-bank-account) and the [paper check phase-out](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-options/irs-paper-checks-phase-out).

## Is a paper check refund slower?

Yes, in two ways. First, a check adds mail time after the IRS releases it. Second, a lost or delayed check takes longer to fix: you must wait 6 weeks from mailing your return before requesting a trace, and a full trace on a check takes about 6 weeks. If the check was never cashed and is under a year old, the IRS cancels it and mails a replacement in about 4 weeks.

Paper filing and a paper check together are the slowest combination available. E-filing with direct deposit is the fastest.

## Returns that are slow on paper for other reasons

Some mailed returns have added waits built in:

- Returns claiming EITC or ACTC cannot be refunded before February 15 regardless of filing method; details on the [EITC refund date](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-timelines/eitc-refund-date) page.
- Prior-year and past-due returns often have to be mailed and are handled separately; see [late tax return refunds](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-timelines/late-tax-return-refund).
- Form 8379 filed with a paper return takes about 14 weeks, compared with about 11 weeks when e-filed.
- Unsigned returns and math errors are among the IRS's listed causes of slow refunds; software catches many of these before an e-filed return is sent.

## How to speed up next year's refund

If a paper return cost you weeks this year, a few changes help for the 2027 season.

1. E-file if you can. Most software and many preparers can e-file an ordinary Form 1040.
2. Put a bank or prepaid account in your name on the return, with routing and account numbers checked against a statement.
3. If you must mail, sign and date the return, attach every W-2 that shows withholding, and use the correct mailing address from the form instructions.
4. Keep a full copy so you can enter the exact refund amount in Where's My Refund.

## Common questions

### How long does a paper tax return take to process?

The IRS says 6 weeks or more from the date it receives the return. Add mailing time before that, and extra weeks if the return has errors or no bank account.

### When can I check status for a mailed return?

About 4 weeks after you mail it. Before then, Where's My Refund usually cannot find the return.

### Is a paper check refund slower than direct deposit?

Yes. It adds mail time, and a lost check takes weeks to trace and replace. Since the paper check phase-out, a refund on a return without bank details is frozen until you add an account or qualify for a paper-check exception.

### Does sending my return certified mail make the refund faster?

No. It gives you proof of the mailing date, which helps if a deadline is questioned, but the IRS processing time is the same.

### Can I still file a paper return in 2027?

Yes. The paper check phase-out affects how refunds are paid, not whether you may mail a return. Expect the longer processing time.
