> If your tax refund was not received, first confirm in Where's My Refund that the IRS actually sent it. A direct deposit counts as missing 5 days after the 21-day processing window; a paper check counts as missing 6 weeks after you mailed your return. At that point you can request a refund trace, which takes about 6 weeks.

## Key facts

- Direct deposit counts as missing: 5 days after the 21-day processing window
- Paper check counts as missing: 6 weeks after you mailed the return
- Refund trace result: About 6 weeks
- Joint filers start a trace with: Form 3911 by mail
- Rejected deposit notice: CP53E, 30 days to add a bank account

## What should I do if my tax refund was not received?

When a tax refund is not received, the first job is to find out which of two situations you are in: the IRS has **not yet sent** the money, or the IRS **sent it and it never reached you**. Only the second case is a missing refund. The first is a delay, and it has different fixes.

A missing refund is a federal refund that Where's My Refund shows as sent, but that never posted to your account or never arrived in your mailbox within the IRS waiting period. For those refunds, the formal remedy is a refund trace, which asks the IRS and the Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) to find out where the payment went.

This page is the starting point for the missing refunds section of Tax Refund Desk. Work through the checks below in order, then follow the link for your exact situation.

## Check the basics first: was the refund actually sent?

Open Where's My Refund on IRS.gov or the IRS2Go app. You need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, the exact whole-dollar refund amount on your return, and the tax year. The tool shows one of three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved or Refund Sent.

| Stage shown | What it means | What to do |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No record yet | The IRS has not loaded your return into the tool | Wait: 24 hours after e-filing a current-year return, 3 days for a prior-year e-file, 4 weeks for a paper return |
| Return Received | The IRS has the return and is processing it | This is a delay, not a missing refund; see the delay pages |
| Refund Approved | The amount is final and a send date is set | Wait for the send date |
| Refund Sent | Treasury released the money by deposit or check | Count the waiting period below, then trace if needed |

What each Where's My Refund stage means for a refund you have not received

The status tools update once a day, usually overnight, so checking more often will not show anything new. If the tool says it cannot provide information, check that the refund amount you typed matches your return exactly, in whole dollars.

## How long should I wait before a refund counts as not received?

The IRS sets two different waiting periods, one for deposits and one for mailed checks. You can request a trace for a direct deposit that has not arrived 5 days after the 21-day processing period, and for a paper check that has not arrived within 6 weeks of mailing your return (Taxpayer Advocate Service, lost or stolen refund page).

| How the refund was paid | Wait this long | Worked example |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Direct deposit, e-filed return | 21 days plus 5 days | E-filed March 1: trace possible from March 27 |
| Paper check, mailed return | 6 weeks from mailing | Mailed March 1: trace possible from April 12 |
| Check mailed after a CP53 notice | 4 weeks from the notice date | Notice dated May 4: check expected by June 1 |
| Replacement check after a trace | About 4 weeks from cancellation | Applies to uncashed checks under a year old |

Waiting periods before you can act on a missing refund

Banks may not post deposits on weekends or federal holidays, so a refund sent on a Friday can appear on Monday or later. Build that into your count before you assume the money is gone.

## Tax refund not received after 21 days: delayed or lost?

If the 21 days have passed and Where's My Refund still shows Return Received, your refund is delayed, not lost. The IRS says most e-filed refunds arrive within 21 days, but returns with errors, missing signatures, Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) claims, or an injured spouse claim on Form 8379 can take longer.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) publishes rough timeframes for held refunds: about 60 days after you send information the IRS asked for, about 90 days after you file missing prior-year returns, and 45 to 180 days for IRS reviews depending on complexity. A trace will not speed these up, because the money has not left the IRS. Those cases are covered in the Refund Delays section of this site.

## IRS refund not received by direct deposit

When the status says Refund Sent but your balance has not changed, the problem sits between Treasury and your bank. Start with your bank's app or statement, then compare the routing and account numbers on your filed return with your actual account. The IRS says it takes no responsibility for account number errors made by you or your preparer.

### Which direct deposit problem do you have?

- Status says sent, bank shows nothing after a few business days: see [refund sent but not in bank](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/refund-sent-not-in-bank).
- The account on the return is closed: see [refund sent to a closed bank account](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/refund-sent-closed-account).
- A digit was wrong and the money went to someone else's account: see [refund sent to the wrong account](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/refund-sent-wrong-account).
- You received a letter saying your bank information was missing, invalid or rejected: see the [CP53E notice](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/irs-cp53e-notice) page.

> **Rejected deposits are now frozen:** Since the IRS began phasing out paper refund checks on September 30, 2025, most direct deposits rejected by a bank are frozen rather than automatically reissued as checks. You must add or fix a bank account, usually after a CP53E notice, before the money moves again.

## Income tax refund not received as a paper check

Paper refund checks go only to the address the IRS has on file, which is normally the address on your latest return. If you moved after filing and did not tell the IRS, the check may be sitting at your old address. Form 8822, Change of Address, updates your address for future mail.

Once the 6-week wait has passed, a lost, stolen or destroyed check is handled through a trace. If the check was never cashed and is less than a year old, the IRS cancels it and mails a replacement within about 4 weeks. The [lost refund check](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/lost-refund-check) page explains the replacement process and what happens if someone else cashed it.

## Tax refund not received yet: how to start a refund trace

How you start a trace depends on your filing status. Single, head of household and married filing separately filers can start one online in Where's My Refund, in the IRS2Go app, or through the IRS automated refund line. Married couples who filed jointly must mail Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, or speak with an IRS representative, because the check or deposit belongs to both spouses.

| Filing status | How to start | Paperwork |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single | Where's My Refund, IRS2Go or automated phone line | None unless the IRS mails Form 3911 |
| Head of household | Where's My Refund, IRS2Go or automated phone line | None unless the IRS mails Form 3911 |
| Married filing separately | Where's My Refund, IRS2Go or automated phone line | None unless the IRS mails Form 3911 |
| Married filing jointly | Form 3911 by mail, or an IRS representative | Form 3911 signed by both spouses |

Ways to start a refund trace by filing status

The step-by-step process and outcomes are in the [IRS refund trace guide](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/irs-refund-trace). Line-by-line help with the form is on the [Form 3911](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/form-3911-refund-trace) page.

## Who do I contact about a missing refund?

The right contact depends on where the money stopped. Calling the wrong office is one of the most common reasons a missing refund takes longer than it should.

| Situation | Contact | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Refund sent, not received after the wait | IRS, by starting a trace | Only the IRS can open a trace with BFS |
| Deposit shows as pending or returned | Your bank or card provider | The bank decides when and whether to post it |
| Refund arrived smaller than expected | The agency named on the BFS offset notice | Debt disputes go to that agency, not the IRS |
| Serious financial hardship from the delay | Taxpayer Advocate Service | TAS can help when a delay causes hardship |
| Bank details missing or rejected | Your IRS online account | IRS staff cannot change bank details by phone |

Who handles each missing refund problem

## Special cases: deceased taxpayers and refunds received in error

If the refund belongs to someone who has died, the surviving spouse, executor or court-appointed representative follows a separate claims process; see [refunds for a deceased taxpayer](https://taxrefunddesk.com/missing-refunds/deceased-taxpayer-refund).

The opposite problem also happens: money you did not expect lands in your account. A refund that is not yours, or is larger than your return shows, must be returned. The IRS asks you to void and return an erroneous paper check within 21 days, and interest may accrue on money you keep.

## Checklist before the 2027 filing season

Most missing refunds trace back to details that are easy to check before you file. The 2027 filing season start date is not yet announced; the IRS usually confirms it in early January.

- Copy routing and account numbers from your bank's app or a recent statement, not an old check.
- Keep the account open until the refund posts.
- Use an account in your name, your spouse's name or a joint account.
- Update your address with Form 8822 if you move after filing.
- Save your exact refund amount; the status tool needs it to the dollar.

## Common questions

### Why haven't I received my tax refund?

Either the IRS has not sent it yet, or it was sent and did not reach you. Where's My Refund tells you which: Return Received means it is still being processed, while Refund Sent means you should check your bank or mailbox and, after the waiting period, request a trace.

### When can I call the IRS about a refund not received?

For a direct deposit, wait until 5 days after the 21-day processing period. For a mailed paper check, wait 6 weeks from the date you mailed your return. Before that, the IRS generally treats the refund as still on its way.

### Can a missing tax refund be sent again?

Yes, in many cases. An uncashed check under a year old is cancelled and replaced within about 4 weeks. A deposit rejected by the bank is usually frozen until you add a working bank account in your IRS online account.

### Does the IRS pay interest if my refund is late?

Generally yes if the refund is issued more than 45 days after the later of the filing deadline or the date the IRS received your return. The overpayment rate for individuals is 7% a year, compounded daily, for the quarter starting October 1, 2026.

### What if Where's My Refund says sent but I moved?

Paper checks go only to the address on file. Check with the post office at your old address and update your address with Form 8822. If the check does not arrive within the waiting period, request a trace.
