> The IRS says your tax refund may take up to 9 weeks to arrive after you successfully verify your identity, and it asks you to wait 2 to 3 weeks before checking status. Most of that time the refund trackers show little change. If 9 weeks pass with no refund and no new letter, follow up.

## Key facts

- IRS processing window after verifying: Up to 9 weeks
- First status check: 2 to 3 weeks after verifying
- Transcript hold code: TC 570 (released by TC 571)
- Transcript refund code: TC 846, refund issued
- Can the verification hotline give status?: No

## When will I get my tax refund after verifying identity?

The short answer to **when will I get my tax refund after verifying identity** is: up to 9 weeks after verification. The IRS gives that limit on its identity letter pages and in the online verification service, so it applies whether you verified online, by phone or in person.

The clock starts on the day your verification is completed, not the day you filed and not the date on the letter. A return filed in February and verified in April is measured from April. If you are still deciding how to respond to the letter itself, start with our [identity verification hub](https://taxrefunddesk.com/identity-verification).

## The 9-week window for an IRS refund after identity verification

Verification only removes the identity hold. After that, the return re-enters normal processing, where the IRS checks math, matches income and credits, and applies any debts before paying. Nine weeks is the outside edge the IRS gives for all of that.

| Verified on | Check status from | 9-week mark |
| --- | --- | --- |
| February 20 | March 6 to March 13 | April 24 |
| March 16 | March 30 to April 6 | May 18 |
| May 4 | May 18 to May 25 | July 6 |
| August 10 | August 24 to August 31 | October 12 |

Keep the proof of your verification date: a screenshot of the online confirmation, or your notes from the call with the date, time and agent ID. Everything that follows is measured from it.

## What does Where's My Refund show after you verify?

Expect the refund trackers to look unchanged for a while. The IRS asks you not to check until 2 to 3 weeks after verifying, because the release takes time to reach its systems. Where's My Refund, the IRS2Go app and your online account all update once a day, usually overnight, so checking several times a day gains nothing.

When the return clears, the tracker should move toward Refund Approved and then Refund Sent. Our [Where's My Refund guide](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-status) explains each stage and message.

> **Do not call the verification line for status:** The Taxpayer Protection Program number on your letter handles identity verification only. The IRS says refund status is not available there.

## Transcript signs that your refund is moving

Your tax account transcript, free in your IRS online account, often shows more than the tracker. These are the codes that matter during an identity hold:

| Code | What it means | What it tells you |
| --- | --- | --- |
| TC 971 | Miscellaneous action; meaning depends on its action code, often a notice issued | The IRS recorded something, such as sending your letter |
| TC 570 | Additional liability pending or credit hold | The refund is frozen for now |
| TC 571 | Reverses TC 570 | The hold has been released |
| TC 290 (often $0.00) | Adjustment posted; can release several holds | Often appears alongside a release |
| TC 846 | Refund of overpayment issued | The refund has been sent, with the date |

The Taxpayer Advocate Service points to TC 570 and TC 971 as the codes to look for during an identity verification delay. ## Why is my refund still processing after I verified?

Inside the 9 weeks, still processing is normal. Past that point, these are the usual reasons, with the fix for each:

- **The verification never completed.** The IRS warns that people who create a new account during online verification may need to sign in again to finish. If you have no confirmation screen, repeat the process using the instructions on your [CP5071 series notice](https://taxrefunddesk.com/identity-verification/irs-cp5071-notice).
- **A second review started.** Clearing identity does not rule out a separate check of income, withholding or credits. A CP05 notice means that kind of review, and the IRS asks you to allow up to 60 days before contacting it; see our [CP05 notice guide](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-delays/cp05-notice-refund-review).
- **The refund was reduced or taken.** An offset for a federal or state debt can shrink the refund, and a separate notice will explain it.
- **Bank details were missing or rejected.** The IRS now freezes many refunds that cannot be deposited until you add or fix account details in your online account.
- **You did not file the return.** If you reported that the return was not yours, the case moves to identity theft handling, where the National Taxpayer Advocate's 2026 mid-year report found cases took about 20 months to resolve.

## Should I call after 9 weeks? When to follow up

Yes. Once 9 full weeks have passed since you verified, and there is no refund, no TC 846 on your transcript and no new letter, it is reasonable to contact the IRS about the refund itself. Use the general IRS refund channels rather than the verification line; our page on the [IRS refund phone number](https://taxrefunddesk.com/refund-status/irs-refund-phone-number) lists the official options.

1. Pull your tax account transcript and note the latest codes and dates.
2. Have your verification date and proof, the letter, and your return ready.
3. Contact the IRS and explain that the identity hold was cleared on a specific date and the 9-week window has passed.
4. If the call does not resolve it, or the delay is causing serious financial hardship, contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service, which helps with refunds held beyond normal timeframes.

If you cannot reach anyone about the verification itself, our [Taxpayer Protection Program hotline page](https://taxrefunddesk.com/identity-verification/taxpayer-protection-program-hotline) covers that line separately.

## How to verify identity for refund release, in brief

If you landed here before verifying: follow the method on your letter. CP5071 series notices can usually be answered at irs.gov/verifyreturn, Letter 4883C by phone, and Letter 5747C only in person. Have the letter, the return for that year, a prior-year return and your W-2s or 1099s ready, and the 9-week clock starts once you pass.

## Common questions

### How long after verifying identity do I get my refund?

Up to 9 weeks after the verification succeeds, according to the IRS. Wait 2 to 3 weeks before checking status.

### Does Where's My Refund update after identity verification?

Yes, but not right away. It updates once a day, and the IRS suggests waiting 2 to 3 weeks after verifying before you check.

### Will I get interest if my refund is delayed by identity verification?

Possibly. The IRS generally has 45 days to issue a refund without paying interest; after that, overpayment interest can run from the latest of the filing due date, the date a late return was received, or the date the return became processable. Whether you qualify depends on your dates.

### Can the IRS take part of my refund after I verify?

Yes. Verification does not stop offsets for past-due debts such as child support or state tax, and it does not stop IRS corrections that change the amount. You would get a notice explaining any change.

### What if I verified but got another identity letter?

Compare the dates and letter numbers. If the new letter is dated after you verified, follow its instructions, since your first verification may not have been recorded.
