> You can amend a tax return online by e-filing Form 1040-X through tax software for the current tax year and the two prior tax periods, according to the IRS. Returns for tax year 2021 and earlier must be mailed. You can e-file up to three amended returns for the same year, and an e-filed 1040-X can request direct deposit of the refund.

## Key facts

- Years that can be e-filed: Current tax year and two prior tax periods
- Paper only: Tax year 2021 and earlier
- E-filed amendments per tax year: Up to 3; a fourth is rejected
- Free guided software AGI limit (2026 season): $89,000 or less
- Free File Fillable Forms: Cannot prepare or file a 1040-X

## Can I amend my tax return online?

Yes. The IRS accepts electronically filed Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, through commercial tax software and paid preparers. There is no IRS web form where you type in a 1040-X directly; the amended return is sent through the same e-file system as original returns.

Filing online does not change the review. The IRS still quotes 8 to 12 weeks, and up to 16, for an e-filed 1040-X. What you gain is a confirmed submission date, no mail delays, and the option of direct deposit. Our [amended return guide](https://taxrefunddesk.com/amended-returns) covers whether you should amend at all.

## Which years can be amended electronically?

The IRS amended return FAQ says you can e-file a 1040-X for the current tax year and the two prior tax periods. Its main amended-return page adds that returns for tax year 2021 and earlier must be filed on paper. Your software decides in practice which of the open years it supports, so check before you start.

| Situation | Can you e-file the 1040-X? | IRS rule |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Recent year, original return e-filed | Yes | Current year and two prior tax periods |
| Tax year 2021 or earlier | No, mail it | Older years must be on paper |
| Original filed on paper during the current processing year | No, mail it | Amendment must also be on paper |
| Fourth amendment for the same year | No | Limit of three e-filed 1040-X per tax year |
| Refund claim past the 3-year limit | Filing possible, refund generally barred | Claim deadline still applies |

E-file eligibility for Form 1040-X

The e-file window and the refund deadline are separate rules. A year you can no longer e-file may still be open for a refund on paper, and a year you can e-file may already be past its refund deadline. Our [amend tax return time limit](https://taxrefunddesk.com/amended-returns/amend-tax-return-time-limit) page lists the refund deadlines for each year.

## How many times can I e-file an amended return?

You can e-file up to three amended returns for the same tax year. The IRS rejects a fourth electronic 1040-X for that year, and any later change has to be mailed. Each tax year has its own count, so amending 2024 twice does not use up your 2025 attempts.

Before sending a second amendment, wait for the first to finish. If the first is still being processed, the second can arrive while your account is changing. Once the first shows Completed in Where's My Amended Return, prepare the next one from the figures the IRS actually allowed.

## Amended tax return online for free: what the options are

Your free options for an amended tax return online depend on how you filed the original. The IRS says you can amend using the same IRS Free File guided software you used for the original return. In the 2026 filing season, the guided Free File offers were limited to people with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less.

- **IRS Free File guided software:** can amend a return you originally filed through the same offer; eligibility and terms are set by each provider.
- **Free File Fillable Forms:** the IRS says it cannot prepare or file an amended return, even though it has no income limit.
- **IRS Free File for prior years:** Free File covers only the current-year return, so it cannot be used to start a past-due original return.
- **Paper Form 1040-X:** always free to download from IRS.gov and mail, for any year you are allowed to amend.

> **Amend tax return for free on paper:** If no free e-file option fits, the paper 1040-X costs nothing but postage. It takes longer to reach the IRS and the refund comes by check, but the review itself follows the same 8 to 12 week range.

## What you need to e-file an amended return

1. The original return for that year, or the figures as the IRS adjusted them.
2. Corrected schedules, forms and any new W-2c or 1099 showing added withholding.
3. Identity Protection PINs for everyone on the return who has one; e-filed returns are rejected if a required IP PIN is missing or wrong.
4. For a joint return, each spouse's signature PIN, date of birth and IP PIN if issued.
5. Form 8879 if a paid preparer transmits the 1040-X for you.
6. Bank routing and account numbers if you want direct deposit, and Form 8888 if you want to split the refund.

The line-by-line entries are the same as a paper form; our [Form 1040-X guide](https://taxrefunddesk.com/amended-returns/form-1040-x-how-to) explains Columns A, B and C and the explanation in Part II.

## E-file vs paper 1040-X: when paper is required

Paper is required for tax year 2021 and earlier, for amendments to a return you filed on paper during the current processing year, and for a fourth amendment to the same year. Mail it to the address for your state in the current Form 1040-X instructions.

After an e-filed amendment is accepted, it follows the same path as a paper one: status appears in about 3 weeks, then the transcript records it. Our [amended return transcript](https://taxrefunddesk.com/amended-returns/amended-return-transcript) page shows the codes that confirm the IRS received and posted it.

## Common questions

### Can I amend my tax return online if I filed on paper?

Only in some cases. The IRS says that if you filed the original return on paper during the current processing year, the amended return must also be filed on paper. For older paper returns in the e-file window, check whether your software supports it.

### Can I amend my return on the IRS website?

No. The IRS does not offer an online 1040-X form of its own. You e-file through tax software or a preparer, or download the paper form from IRS.gov and mail it.

### Is it faster to amend a tax return online?

It removes mail and intake time, and it allows direct deposit, but the IRS quotes the same 8 to 12 week review for e-filed and paper 1040-X forms.

### What happens if my e-filed 1040-X is rejected?

A rejected e-file was not received, so correct the issue named in the rejection, such as a missing IP PIN, and resubmit. If it was your fourth attempt for that year, you must mail a paper 1040-X instead.

### Can I amend a state return online at the same time?

Some states accept electronic amended returns and others require paper. The IRS does not amend your state return for you, so check your state revenue department's own rules.
